I’m looking to major in chemistry (or somewhere in the science field) and maybe history, too. What are some schools that are more flexible with that and with taking classes outside your major?
Smith, Grinnell, Hamilton, Brown, Amherst, the University of Rochester.
Kalamazoo has few gen ed requirements, so more flexibility.
Under a scenario where undergraduates are required to take 32 courses within an open curriculum, your hypothetical schedule might include 10 history courses, 8 chemistry courses, and possibly 4 courses in physics and calculus to meet the prerequisites for the chemistry classes. That would still leave at least ten courses that could be entirely of your own choosing. From these, however, I would recommend that you distribute some of them across subjects such as classics, philosophy, religious studies, government, English and geoscience, as a way of insuring that you do not graduate with both a double major and an incomplete education.
