I'm interested in majoring in Russian, but having a hard time finding schools that offer Russian majors. Does anyone know of schools that have "top programs" in Russian?

I'm an Indiana resident, ao I'd prefer a school in the Midwest or Florida. I would also like a school with lots of study abroad opportunities in Russian, and an ROTC program.

Thanks for the help!

Well, I cant imagine it being hard to find colleges with Russian major … almost every school my D is looking into has Russian.

But, if your criteria is “top” and midwest, let me state the obvious … Oberlin.

Sorry, cant help you with ROTC at all.

Closer to home, Purdue offers a Russian major

It also has an army, navy, and air force ROTC program.

Your best option is most likely in-state. Indiana U is well-known for its language offerings, and its tuition of $10K per year is a bargain. Students can major in Slavic Languages (Russian or Slavic track) or minor in East European studies, and it offers Romanian, Czech, Polish, and the Serbo-Croatian languages in addition to Russian. You can’t ask for much more!

The LCTL database is usually a good place to start with unusual languages. It claims 730 colleges offer Russian, however, so I can’t imagine it will help you much.

Perhaps more helpful is the list of colleges with graduate programs in [Slavic studies](<a href=“Graduate Programs in Slavic Studies”>Graduate Programs in Slavic Studies), as they’re almost guaranteed to offer several years of Russian on a regular basis. I’ve bolded the programs in the Midwest.

IU appears to have more limited Russian language offerings each semester than its in state counterpart, Purdue.

I recommended Wisconsin because it’s home to one of the Russian language flagships. If the OP can get into ROTC, costs shouldn’t be an issue (well maybe they will, I’m not familiar with the dollar amount of an ROTC scholarship).

No, I have very competitive stats for the ROTC scholarship, so cost will most likely not be an issue. And if it is, I will probably visit both IU and Purdue and decide between them. Thanks for the help everybody!
