Schools with strong biology programs that offer good merit aid

Do you know of colleges with a strong biology or science program that tend to provide merrit aid?

There are so many it would be a long list! Can you tell us if you’d like public or private, small or large, and what area of the country? If finances are a concern, how what are your stats and how much can your family contribute to your education?

For a quick list, you can start with the Association of American Universities. It’s an invitation only group of the 62 leading research universities and includes all the “heavy hitters” in science. Many offer merit aid and a few promise to meet financial need in full.

Southwestern University in Georgetown, Tx. They are very generous with merit scholarships and their “sticker price” is about $40k a year

Thanks sk8rmom.

I’m trying to help the D of a good friend who is top of her class, taken all available AP’s and should have close to a 4.00 GPA. SAT results are on the way, but based on PSAT results she should be top percentile. She wants to study biology as a pre-med.

The girl is thinking about the top schools including the Ivy s, but my friend, her father, should fall into the “middle class dilemma”, not enough resources and not enough financial help. I think a solution would be merit aid in a lower tier college, but one that has a decent science program.

What is her PSAT? What state is she in? She may be a likely NMF. If so, she’ll have more choices.

If she’s thinking about med school, then she’s wise to follow your advice and go to a good school that won’t break the bank, so that med school will be more do-able. Some kids borrow for undergrad, and then can’t afford to also borrow for med school.

Agnostic - tell her to look at Tulane and apply for the DHS (full tuition). Plus she would get another $2000 per year for NMF, assuming based on your statement about her PSAT that she is one. There are literally dozens of good choices for her, I am just pointing out this one because I know it well. Strong school, strong research in biology at both uptown campus and med school (4 miles away), good record of students getting into med school.
