I'm looking for schools with strong chem programs. I don't think i'll major in it since i'm not that great at it in school, but I LOVE it, so maybe i'll minor in it.... My grades aren't stellar, so i'm not looking for ivies or anything, i just don't really know where to start looking as college search engines and rankings seem very unreliable to me.
Thanks for the help!

University of California-Berkeley, you can't go wrong. It is like the mecca of chemistry.

isn't that super selective? especially if i live in NY!:)

Washington University in ST. Louis

a thought, but isn't that also super selective?

mdhopeful, let us start with the basics. What would your ideal school be like?

1) Small, medium or large?
2) Intellectual or party atmoshpere?
3) Quiet or spirited?
4) Urban, suburban or rural?
5) Eastcoast, West coast, South or Midwest?

What do you want to do with your degree?

And give us your GPA (unweighed), class rank, ECs, SATs, etc... I need to know that information to give you a useful list.

For now, I recommend you look into:

Indiana University-Bloomington
Pennsylvania State University-University Park
Purdue University-West Lafayette
University of Colorado-Boulder
University of Texas-Austin
University of Washington
University of Wisconsin-Madison

Ok, sorry, didn't think of that
1) i REALLY don't want large classes, I'd like my professors to know who i am, but the distinction between small/medium for me is slight.
2) definitely intellectual
3) doesn't matter
4) definitely east coast

I'm not sure what I want to do. I always thought of being a doctor, but now i'm thinking that I just really love the sciences, and i might do something else. I just want to have the degree after studying something I really loved.

unweighted GPA is about 93 (honors classes, no APs yet) PSATs 1250
class rank i have no idea
EC's: varsity cross country, varisty winter track, varisty spring track (i'm not good, i just do it to stay in shape, so i won't get money or anything.) matheletes, french honor society, science honor society, peer leadership, peer mediation, research, tutoring, there's probably a few more...

if there's anything else needed, please post. again, i'm just looking to start. I don't really know where to look, so that's why i posted here.

Thanks for all the help!

bumpageness

American University in D.C might be one you'd like... I think it's a bit of an underrated school. It's got a lot to offer and is a medium sized school.

Ithaca College in NY is also another good one.

Lynchburg College in VA is small, and very generous with financial aid. My co-worker's S goes there and he loves it. Seems to be a nice bunch of kids, lots of school spirit for a small school, but a bit on the "preppy" side.

There are a lot of options out there. Other than a possible minor in Chemistry, do you know what you would want to be your "main" field of study? Something math and science related or more liberal arts? Is money an issue? Ect.

Here's a list of colleges I recommend. Unfortunately they are mostly midwestern, but the colleges themselves are highly intellectual and very diverse:

Colgate University
Carroll College
Franklin and Marshall College
Grinnell College
Hope College
Lafayette College
Lawrence University
Ripon College
St. Olaf College
University of Chicago
Wooster College

I would also add Allegheny College and Lawrence University to the list.

For many years, the University of Illinois (Urbana) has been recognized as having one of the top chemistry departments in the nation. Of course, the U of I is a major research university with all of the pros and cons that come along with being a research university.

When I visited Davidson they said that last year every one of their chemistry majors last year got a full ride to whatever graduate school they went to...the guide didn't know the details so don't hold me to this

so far, i've found, of the colleges listed, Colgate, F&M, Lafayette, American, Ithaca, and Penn State are the colleges in the northeast. Are there any others I can start looking at that anyone can think of?

Thanks!
