Schools with strong Econ. programs

Excluding Liberal Arts Colleges, what are some other colleges that have strong Econ. programs that are similar to NYU(CAS) and CMU(H&SS) in terms of location, diversity, strength of program, and selectivity?

Location? Those two schools do not share much in common where location is concerned. Pittsburgh and NYC have nothing in common, except perhaps cold winters. Pitt is a mid-sized, industrial, midwestern city. In contrast, NYC is a huge, East Coast, financial center.

At any rate, given the two schools mentioned above, another school worth looking at the University of Rochester.

Maybe I should have been more specific. I was referring to the fact that CMU and NYU are both in urban areas unlike say Virgina Tech.

University of Chicago, of course. It's pretty damn urban, except not exactly in a good way. Maybe Northwestern if you count the suburbs.

Chicago is an excellent choice, as a top econ school. Although, I wouldn't say that it's location is bad. Many people assume the area is dangerous just because it happens to be on the south side, but it's really not that bad. Everyone I know who goes there loves the area (it's a eclectic, funky little neighborhood with lots of restaurants and shops - perfect for college students).

Does it have to be a large city, or will a city with a population of 100,000-250,000 people do?

Not a big city, but nothing like farms, farms, and then a college :P

Alright, here's a list of 25 urban or suburban universities with several levels of selectivity:
