Schools with Strong Economics Departments

Hi! I'm a senior this year and I'm having to sort through colleges but I'm wondering which colleges are strong in Economics? I plan to go into international business/finance but I need to find a school to my liking first.

I haven't had time to talk with my school counselor yet.... OTL
And I don't have any siblings to confer with so, this is all very new to me. I feel like I haven't researched enough but whenever I google something, the information I find only makes me more confused.

But, I have been looking at a few schools like Columbia, UPenn and some more.

One thing to remember is that I was a bit of a slacker during my freshman-junior year and my GPA isn't as high as it could be. I'm still hoping you could suggest me schools within my range?

Unweighted GPA: 3.08
Weighted GPA: 3.5227
ACT: 28 Composite

I'll be retaking the ACT this October.

With those grades and scores Columbia and Penn are huge reaches. What state are you from? How much can your family afford?

UChicago has the best economics department but your grades would make it a longshot.

I’m in Louisiana.

And as for price, I’m looking at schools under 30k.

Secondly, I’ve been looking into accounting as well. I hope that helps. So either Economic or an Accounting major.
I’ve been considering University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign but I’m not sure whether or not I’m being realistic with that college.

I second this

If you want only business you could look at Bentley in Massachusetts or (harder to get into) Babson. Boston College is supposed to have good undergraduate business.

Chicago, Columbia and Penn are unrealistic reaches. Some more realistic matches and reaches given the OP’s stats would include:

Boston University
Indiana University-Bloomington
University of Maryland-College Park
University of Minnesota-Twin Cities
University of Wisconsin-Madison

Unfortunately, of all those schools only UMinn is within the cost constraints of the OP - $30K/year. OP should also look at LSU (in-state and a good school).

Oh, I’m applying to LSU. Hahahhaa.
Both my parents are members of LSU faculty.

LSU has a good accounting program. One of my accting co-workers is from there.

I’m told that u of south carolina has a great international business/economics program.

Change LSU…to LSE. :)

University of South Carolina is ranked #1 in International Business by US News, the finance program consistently sends graduates to work at Bank of America, Wells Fargo, Merill Lynch, and some of the investment banks in NYC, and the accounting program sends most of its graduates to Big 4 accounting firms in Charlotte and Atlanta.

Your GPA is low, but you can make up for it by getting high SAT or ACT scores. A 28 is pretty good, but the higher the better. Out-of-state tuition is a bit below $30k, but you can get in-state tuition if you get something like $1,000 in scholarships. Definitely check it out.
