I'm looking to go to a school with a strong history and economic department as that is what i plan to major in. I am just now starting to apply to schools and visit. I live in Iowa. Also I have almost no shot of getting into an Ivy so don't bother with those. Just for a reference I have about a 3.5 uw gpa, have scored 30 on my ACT twice, and am very active in extracurriculars and golf. Any recommendations would be great.

Check out Claremont McKenna. Your gpa may be low, but they look at the whole picture. They have a great golf program. (Ranked in the top 5 or so of all colleges/universities by Golf Digest for both academics and golf.) If you’re a nationally ranked golfer, or, one with a handicap of 1 or less, interested in economics and history, this could be a perfect place. You might also want to check out Pitzer (you could always take econ classes at the other colleges.) Their golf program is combined with Pomona.

I’m aware Claremont has a superb golf program. I’m not sure if I would actually like to play golf in college. My handicap right now is about a 5 so I don’t see that as a possibility.

if you plan to stay in the midwest then grinnell and carleton are two of the strongest in the country (ranked 2nd and 3rd in econ phd productivity per capita) and of course you have uchicago which is right up there with harvard and princeton as far as a graduate program in econ goes.
