Schools with strong theatre and creative writing schools?

I go to community college in Maryland and plan to apply to schools for fall 2013 admission. I will be applying to UMD College Park.

I want to be an actress. I'm also interested in playwriting/screenwriting, being a theatre critic, and fiction writing.

What I'm looking for in a school:

It MUST have a strong drama program.

It also should have strong creative writing program. Classes in playwriting or whatever are an added bonus.

Affordability is ideal, but I'm more interested in finding a school I'll love.

The smaller the better, I'd like lots of individual attention.

Location: I love California. I'm also open to studying outside the USA. Not a huge fan of the frigid north, empty midwest, or conservative south. But education matters more than location. While I have a preference, it won't be a deciding factor until I'm accepted.

Connections to the performing arts/writing worlds.

Right now I like Bard College. Can you recommend similar schools?

I used to be interested in the Claremont Colleges. Which of those has the best theatre and/or writing program?

Northwestern University (a recent find someone introduced to me) has a great arts program in general and is in the US News Top 15. UCLA has a BA program in acting (I think) that is similar to a BFA, but it’s just a bachelor’s degree. USC also has a great acting program, and it’s a BFA (Bachelor’s in Fine Arts).

There’s also Carnegie Mellon and NYC Tisch, great but intense BFA programs in theatre. The only thing is that you don’t have time for other studies…

Can your family afford to pay for a small private school in CA?
