Dartmouth, Columbia, Brown, Duke, and Penn are still elite Ivy-level schools with great placement and reputation, NYU is ranked like 40th overall. So NYU is much more of a number 2 syndrome sufferer than most top schools.

And from the NYU students I've been around (I live with a bunch nearby) they all make sure to comment that they got accepted into Penn (but Philly sucked) or Cornell (but Ithaca sucked) or Columbia (but its in Harlem) and chose NYU instead. Don't believe any of them. Most of these types are in Stern.

"Realize, though, that it's just an attitude, and not a personality, The same way that many southerners, even if they're not nice people, exude that talky, folksy charm, New Yorkers are brash and unfriendly, even if they have a heart of gold."
absolutely!! I have several friends who went to school down south hoping to find that southern charm, oh, they found it, and then realized what was underneath! I think New Yorkers are hilariously blunt.

That said, I didn't go to Sarah Lawrence because the people seemed snobby, too cool for school, not very friendly at all.

Oh come on, there are nerds who are snobby because they think that "nerds will inherit the earth" there are hipsters who are snobby because they are just so much cooler than you, and yes, there are rich preps that are snobby because, well, having money just makes you better than other people! Thinking that 9/10 people who are rich and preppy will be snobby just shows your own insecurities. Snobs come in all shapes and sizes, you probably just don't care about the others.

The most obnoxious kid I know from my son's elementary school is at Vanderbilt. He was a total jock snob.

What turned me off on New Yorkers is all the cold calls from NY stockbrokers. One called me a ***** on the phone for not allowing him to speak to my husband. My husband absolutely hates phone solicitations and asks me to screen his calls, and we already had a trusted local broker on retainer.

avant-garde: No, he only got worse when he hit high school. He just didn't go to son's high school because it didn't have good enough sports teams.

ricegal, you obviously haven't visited school. Meeting one person isn't enough to stereotype a whole college. Out of all my college visits, Vandy was by far the friendliest. I got lost on campus and a student went out of their way to show me how to get to the library. People greet each other, smile, and hold open doors.

Wouldn't any of the top schools be snobby? If you're at Harvard, you've got to put on quite an act to make yourself look good compared to everyone else there.

The NYU thing is hilarious to me since I know someone that goes there that exactly fits this definition. Rich, extremely well-dressed, and when I said Hi to him, he pretty much blew me off, no doubt because I am a foot shorter than he was.
