Can someone please explain to me how the undergraduate schools within the university work? Do you apply outright say to SFS and then you are not allowed to change schools for your entire course of study? Can you take classes from other schools? How many schools are there within the undergraduate curriculum and what percentage of the student body are in each school?

So I just found this on the Georgetown website which answers some of my questions about how may schools are within the undergraduate program, but could someone with personal experience with Georgetown please elaborate.
I’m going to be a Freshman at Georgetown next year in the SFS. When I applied using the Georgetown application I checked the box that said I was applying to SFS, and then had to write an essay specific to SFS. You are allowed to switch undergrad schools once you get to Georgetown, but it requires an application and I’m not sure how easy it is. There are a lot of different rules about majoring or minoring across schools, but I know if you’re in the SFS you can minor in a language in the College, but you can’t major in any school other than SFS.
This is all information that I gleaned from the website, info. session, and GAAP weekend. Good luck!
You can transfer schools once you are admitted, about 10% of students do, but it does require applying into that school (including rewriting your school-specific admissions essay) and they can turn you down. You cannot double major across schools, but with a few exceptions (mainly SFS students), you can take minors. The liberal arts core requirements mean you will certainly take classes outside of your major/likely in another school at least during your first two years. There are four undergraduate schools with the College being the largest and the NHS being the smallest but you’ll find very little division between people of different schools with the exception of classes.
Agreed - transfer shouldn’t be used as a strategy to get in to the competitive schools, particularly since it’s not guaranteed.
I actually transferred from the College into the MSB in the spring before I came to Georgetown. It was a pretty easy process, I just had to write two essays: one explaining my reason for the transfer and another responding the the school specific prompt. Ironically, I’m actually transferring back into the College now too, and it has also been a fairly straightforward process as well.
SFS has higher admit standards than other undergraduate schools at Georgetown.
The SFS actually has a comparably higher admit rate to the College and the MSB.
True, but SFS might have a more self-selecting group of higher achievers applying.
Would MSB be considered the second hardest school to get into at Georgetown?
In general, I tend to think of the prestige level/admission difficulty ranking as (1) SFS, (2) COL, (3) MSB, (4) NHS. That said, they’re all very difficult to get into.
@2016senior2020 That’s interesting, I always thought of the college to be the easiest to get into.
@class0f2017 Well technically SFS has the highest acceptance rate but their “stats” (such as standardized test scores) are a little higher than the other schools. Meanwhile, the other three schools have approximately the same acceptance rates, with “stats” in about the order listed above. I wouldn’t put a ton of weight in this when you’re deciding which school to apply to, though. None of them is much harder or easier than any of the others and they’re all incredibly competitive to get into.
