Which schools are these? They are out there, but hard to find. Thanks. I do know that for certain majors one still needs to take a foreign language even if it is not a part of gen ed requirements.

Why not go to a school that has no Gen Ed requirements at all? cough Brown cough

University of Rochester has no language requirement. Johns Hopkins (as far as I can tell from the website) has no language requirement.

Because not everyone can get into Brown.

Thank you. Also, I am looking from some lower tier schools than those listed. I actually was aware of Rochester and Brown, but didn't know that Hopkins also had no FL requirement. That is interesting. It seems that there are more competitive schools, particularly on the east coast that do not have a FL requirement, than just selective/more selective category. I am looking for some moderately competitive schools without FL requirements (which is challenging, and time consuming using the look it up in each catalog method).
Does anyone else know of other schools? Thank you for your help.

Wesleyan is another one, though we're also competitive.

Have you tried seaching the forum? This may have been covered before.

Weskid, yes, and I am trying to find more schools. I know that they must be out there. CC tends to keep naming highly competitive schools, so it is tough. I did know about Wesleyan. I read that on CC that they did away with Gen Eds. Is that right?

Check the public universities too. For instance, at Iowa State University the College of Ag and Life Sciences doesn't require foreign languages for a Biology major, but the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences does.

Well, there are gen ed "suggestions." They aren't required to graduate, but they are for honors and for some majors. Either way, no lang. requirment, though!

Amherst is another one w/out any requierments, but again, it's selective.

Lets see, a few others:
--Skidmore does have a lang. requirment, but as I understand it, it's only one class. I might be wrong about that, though.
--Reed has fairly strenuos distribution requirements, but Mathematics, Logic, Foreign Language and Linguistics all fall into one catagory, so one could not take a language if one was willing to do math instead.
--I think Pitzer doesn't have one, but I could be wrong...

At many publics, foreign language is waived for some B.S. programs.

Thanks ferryboat. Anyone else know of any other LACs that do not require FL?

engineering schools

Chicagoboy, I thought of that too. That could work if you want engineering. Anyone know of other LACs without FL requirements?

you can get out of it at Swarthmore if you take 3 years in high school. remember, with a AP test you can get out of many as well.

Rice, but it's as selective as Brown.

Although not a LAC, it's "LAC-like": American University in DC.

Northeastmom, I'm not sure but I think these schools do not have a foreign language requirement:Quinnipiac, Springfield, WNEC, Bloomsburg and West Chester (both in PA).

chedva, thanks about American.

Poi, thank you. I will look into a couple of those as well.

Does anyone else know of other LACs without the FL requirement for gen ed?

This is the list I have, I am not sure how up-to-date it is though, nor why it is so focussed on NY:

Pitzer College (CA)
Connecticut College (CT)
Grinnell College (IA)
Cazenovia College (NY)
Elmira College (NY)
Hamilton College (NY)
Ithaca College (NY)
Marist College (NY)
Medaille College (NY)
St. Lawrence University (NY) (foreign language or math)
Sarah Lawrence College (NY)
Siena College (NY)
St. John Fisher College (NY)
Union College (NY)
University of Dayton (OH)
Reed College (OR) (foreign language or math)
Allegheny College (PA)
Bucknell University (PA)
Juniata College (PA)
Lafayette College (PA) (foreign language or culture)
Beloit College (WI)

Colgate and Swathmore will accept high school credits to replace general ed ones, and quite a lot of LACs will let you test out with AP or SAT II scores or by taking a language test set by the college.

I was going to say Union -- just recently toured there w/ S. They have a cultural Gen Ed requirement that can be met by taking a FL, but it can also be met in a couple of other ways, including a semester abroad.

Take Connecticut College off the list:
[quote]
Foreign Language Requirement: Each student must include a course in a foreign language at the intermediate level or higher; as an option, students may choose a new language, in which case they must complete a two semester sequence of the same elementary language. A new language is one in which a student has studied for not more than one full year in secondary school.
