Now that the college admissions process has ended, were there any schools you regret not applying to?
Now that it’s all over and I got into schools that I never thought I’d get into and was accepted at the ones I thought I would, it makes me realize that to some degree it’s just luck and I wish I had applied to a few more schools that I didn’t think I’d have a shot at so didn’t apply!
So just for fun, I would have applied to…
Bryn Mawr
Reed
Pitzer
I don’t regret it. I wanted to apply to Yale but had already narrowed my list down. Hmm…would’ve picked Princeton either way…
I got into all the Ivies I applied to: Harvard, Cornell, Columbia and Penn. Made me wonder if I could have gotten into all of them. Would’ve been awesome. Also Stanford and Caltech. And I guess that’s about it.
But, I’m more than happy ditching all of them for BME at Hopkins.
northwestern, wellesley and duke. haha. dream schools, but still.
I wish I would have applied to Brown, Pomona, and Wake Forest
Cambridge and LSE. I got too lazy because the UK apps were so different.
I would have given MIT a try…I think I was just intimidated, which, in hindsight, isn’t a very good reason. I might have done Cornell, too…maybe a few others? In general, I might have gone for a few more reaches.
Brown and Stanford … and probably should have ditched my Harvard and Princeton apps.
I only applied to 1 and got accepted. Since it was the one and only school I would want to go to, no regrets whatsoever.
I would have applied to:
Boston College, Harvey Mudd, Rice, Northwestern, Georgetown, Haverford, Pomona, UCSD, UCB, MIT, Columbia, UChicago, Tufts, Brown, and Hopkins.
Instead of:
Princeton, Yale, Penn, Brown, Columbia, Cornell, MIT, Stanford, UChicago, Johns Hopkins, Carnegie Mellon, RPI, Boston University, Northeastern, and Tufts.
My priorities have changed a lot since I made my original list. The best advice I can give to everyone is to take EVERYTHING into account. Don’t totally write off schools because your mind may change later and you may decide you actually do want to apply. Keep an open mind and consider EVERYTHING. Even things you think you are not interested in. You may think, for instance, “oh I don’t want to go to an LAC”, and later decide that it is actually a great option. Make sure you really explore and you won’t end up like me, going into college knowing you’re going to transfer.
^ I completely agree with the “take everything into account” statement.
Instead of: MIT, Stanford, Cornell, CMU, UT Austin
Would have applied: MIT, Harvard, Yale, Princeton, UPenn, Cornell, CMU, UT Austin
I really should have cast my net wider and looked at Ivies as well. I originally only wanted to do science/engineering (Electrical eng/comp sci, to be precise), but it turns out that later on, I switched my major (now doubling in Econ and Management). I’m always wondering to myself, “Why didn’t I apply to Harvard?” =(
Also, I never wanted to go to Stanford anyways…
I would have switched my last-minute apps from HYS to Yale, Rice, Swarthmore, Bryn Mawr, and (one of Carleton/Reed/Haverford).
I thought my original list was about as good as it could get considering where it came from–read: a whole lot of compromise and yelling at my mother. Then I threw it away in a fit of dream college euphoria-slash-fatigue. I don’t regret where I ended up, and I might have made the same choice either way, but. Eh.
Schools I should have looked more closely at: Wesleyan, Harvey Mudd, Kenyon, Carleton, Brown, maybe Cornell. GT, as much as I hate to admit it. Maybe some of the CTCLs.
Dude, I’m totally with you Ascendancy. The only schools that I didn’t apply to and would even consider attending over Princeton are Oxford and Cambridge. I kind of wish I had applied to one, but oh well, what the hell? I couldn’t figure out the bloody app.
I also would’ve kind of liked to apply to Columbia, Penn, and UChicago. Just to know. Also, I shouldn’t have applied to UCLA or UC Davis. Waste of my time and their time.
I wanted to go to Yale since middle school…but I thought it required 3 subject tests and I got lazy and a little intimidated. Now, I couldn’t be happier with how everything turned out
Princeton - their fin. aid is amazing. I know it’s not easy to get accepted, but if I got ‘lucky’ and got in i’m sure I could have used that as fin.aid. leverage at my other schools.
Wash U. & USC - my nosy aunts always compare me to my cousins who got great scholarships, I guess pride is my motivation on this one.
Yale I was silly and didn’t think my 3.8 would even compete for transfer.
Ava1992… just so you know, Yale only requires 2 subject tests, Harvard wants 3
And I (kind of) regret not applying to Harvard/Princeton. I LOVE Yale and am amazingly happy Im going, but it would have been interesting to see if I was accepted at other Ivies (Accepted at Yale, but rejected for Wharton)
@thatguy100 Harvard only requires 2 now.
Ehh, maybe I should have applied to Stanford. Then again, no one has been accepted from my school in four years. Besides, I am perfectly content with my college choice
