Schools you would never go to.....

What an old wives tale!

I live on the U. of Chicago campus, and I will be attending in the fall. People here are not at all ugly, though many do have that studious look about them. In fact, from a female's point of view, I find the guys here quite good-looking - in a nerdy sort of way. But I like that. Being smart is hot, generally.

There was a long-running post on UChicago student hotness on the UChicago thread. You might want to dig it up and check it out.

jPoD: if you had to choose be/ Bard and UCONN (both rural) which one would you go for?

I agree, nothing ending with a tech or institute of tech
no schools that are overly religious or religious oriented (dont really care about classes being held on Good Friday) why not easter and christmas ! j/k
no concervative schools
no schools who have very low diversity (makes we uncomfortable to know that Im one of maybe 100 African-Americans in a school of 20,000 and one of maybe 200-300 minority students in a school with the same size)
with that being said no schools in rural all white towns
no ivies except for Columbia (my dream law school!)
no schools in towns that have nothing in them to do what-so-ever

Duke. why? because i go to maryland

Are people at the University of Chicago actually as ugly and unsociable as we think?
By Tucker Max

We should just admit the obvious. The student body at the University of Chicago is ugly. And it’s only getting worse--I’m graduating in the spring.

Our motto should be “The University of Chicago-The School That Beauty Forgot.” Think of the possibilities. The admissions office could sell this school as the perfect place for every ugly nerd across the country. I can only imagine the new theme for the admissions viewbook-“Are you the Ugly Duckling who never blossomed? Do small children clutch at their mother’s legs in terror when you draw near? Do your friends make you wear a mask in order to hang out with them? Was your nickname ‘The Hunchback of AP Calc?’ WE HAVE THE SCHOOL FOR YOU!! Come hang out with every other ugly nerd around the country!! You may be ugly, but so are we!!”

I went to a boarding school in New Jersey, so I can speak from a position of authority on ugliness. I know it when I see it, and it is here. If I had a dollar for every time I heard the words “Man, look how ugly that girl is,” I’d be driving a Bugatti.

I remember my first few days here. I was a wide-eyed freshman eager to explore every opportunity this University provided. After a cursory examination, I thought that the girls were not bad. I flipped through the picture book, and found a few girls that appeared attractive. But once I actually saw these girls in person, it was became painfully apparent that they had sent in the pictures that came with their Wal-Mart wallets.

The ladies were more disappointing than a CBS sitdom. On closer inspection, I realized that these seemingly attractive women were not good looking. Well, I don’t know if “not good looking” is the proper description; perhaps “gills and wooden teeth” is more accurate. I knew that this wasn’t going to be Arizona State, but I also thought that it would be better than a Plastic Surgery Disasters convention.

The phrase “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder” takes on a whole new meaning here--mainly a drunken one. Steeped in an inebriated stupor is about the only way I can find physical beauty in most of the people on this campus. This phenomenon is known by different names: Hyde Park Goggles, The U of C Haze, etc. A friend of mine goes to Rice, the U of C of the South, and he summed up this problem very well, “The girls here are ugly. But I get drunk and hook up anyway. What can you do?”

Of course there are other forms of beauty, but it’s hard to find them when you are reeling from the unique smell combination of Noxema and Designer Scents that seems to be so popular here. And no matter how awesome someone’s personality is, romance becomes simply unpalatable when buckteeth and acne are involved. Hasn't anyone ever heard of braces and Acutane?

I wonder what day God created the women at this school? Couldn’t he have rested on that day too? Try all you want to find good looking girls at the U of C, but it’s sort of like trying to go 90 in a Hyundai--it just isn’t going to happen.

This is not to say that the men here are competing with Tom Cruise. Most guys here have faces like an old boot that’s been fished out of a river. I’ve dropped turds better looking than some of the chumps at this place. I hear that the Trojan condom company hires more people from the U of C than any other school. It makes sense if you think about it; they need to get their poster-boys somewhere. But at least SOME of the guys here are handsome.

It’s not as if the city of Chicago is a bastion for the uglies of the world. Take the CTA downtown and within five minutes of getting off the bus you’ll see more attractive people than you have in the past two months at the U of C. Hell, you’ll see more hot girls on the bus ride to downtown than you have in the past two months here. What does it say when the public transportation in this city provides a better venue for girl spotting than a major college campus?

Go to a Cubs game and you’ll see more handsome guys in five minutes than in five weeks here. Of course a lot of them will probably be gay, but compared to the girls at the U of C, I don’t think homosexuality would be all that bad. At least gay guys dress well and smell good.

Is there something inherently ugly about intelligence? Why do the majority of guys here look like they have yet to evolve from Java Man? Why do the majority of girls here look their faces have been run over by garbage trucks? Does God hate us? What have we done to incur his spiteful wrath? For damn sure we didn’t do anything worse than, or even close to, Sodom or Gomorrah.

Ugliness is one thing; after all, one can only do so much with the genetic package they were born with. But cleanliness is a choice, and the undergrads here Just Say No. Is it me, or does it seem like this school has the lowest number of clean people per capita in the country? There are people walking around this campus that could probably qualify as SuperFund clean-up sites. I grew up in the thick of rural redneck Kentucky, yet the cleaning habits of the people here makes me long for the days of hanging out in the holler with Jethro and Billy Bob, playing in the mud and shootin’ at road signs. At least they took some pride in their mulletts.

Perhaps the high-level of heinousness at this school would be excusable if it was a fun place to be. Alas, that is not the case. This place has the social life of Riker’s Island, except without the rampant anal sex. It makes me yearn to get on the guest list for parties at the geriatric ward of Kevorkian Regional Hospital; those people are a collection of teaming gregarious social butterflies compared to my fellow collegians. I would call this place ‘socially retarded’ but at the mall I have actually seen retarded people have fun and be social.

Of course there are always those schmucks who think that this place is great and say that anyone who doesn’t believe so holds unrealistic visions of college life. To those people I can only say one thing: VISIT OTHER SCHOOLS. Go spend a week at Vanderbilt, UVA, Tulane, UCLA, or any number of other schools, then come back and apologize to me for saying stupid things.

If you think this place is fun, then Texas will give you a stroke. If you think the frat parties here are cool, the University of Colorado at Boulder will make you think you are in the Elysian Fields. If you think the people at this school are good-looking, Florida State will make you incontinent with excitement.

I know that this column has probably ****ed off most of this campus, but as my friend Kevin says, “Play your music--whatever.” Another friend told me not to write this, because no girl would go out with me after she read it. Is that supposed to deter me? SO WHAT? I’d rather give a prostate exam to an angry badger than see any of the she-apes at this school naked. I’ve already hooked-up with the three attractive girls on campus. This column can’t hurt me anymore.

The Citadel. Those kids are crazy for paying to put up with the same crap those in the U.S. military academics get for free.

Warren Wilson College. I'm pretty liberal and open, but this is granola earth biscuits in the extreme.

HAHA!!! I love this article!

i dont get the maryland and duke thing...dukes rival is unc right?

Duke is also rivals with UMD

haha I love that article. Thanks.

Well, maybe I am use to the ugliness here. I have lived on the UChicago campus for the majority of my life.

But still: In my opinion, the guys are (overall) good-looking.

jPoD: if you had to choose be/ Bard and UCONN (both rural) which one would you go for?

I'm pretty biased because i dont like NY too much, especially NY State, but in any case, i'd take UConn over Bard.

someone explain to me why some refuse to go to their own state's school?? In another thread someone was thinking about going to PSU over UNC because he/she lived in NC. Pay OOS PSU which is insane money over UNC which has an amazing instate tuition? Someone enlighten me to why it is such a big deal to be going to college with 50 kids from your high school knowing there is going to be 5,000-7,500 students in your class at college?? Why is this grade 13 thing such a big deal to people?? If you like your high school and the people there, it shouldn't be a problem. If you have a reputation you do not like or not as many friends it isn't going to make a difference in college. I really cannot comprehend why people would give up places that offer great educations balanced with amazing social lives at unmatchable prices to go to a more expensive school just because it isn't grade 13?

I think, in general if someone lives instate and gets in at UVA, Umich, and UNC they shouldn't be going anywhere else unless it is in the top 10 of the country. Atelast the top 15 unless there is a reason specific to your major or you really want smaller classes. Basically I don't think the "grade 13" aspect should deter anyone, but hey, thats just me.

Well obviously this is addressed to me. Here we go:

someone explain to me why some refuse to go to their own state's school??

I wont get into Penn State

I wouldnt anyway

If you like your high school and the people there, it shouldn't be a problem.

I dont....

If you have a reputation you do not like or not as many friends it isn't going to make a difference in college.

I beg to differ.

I really cannot comprehend why people would give up places that offer great educations balanced with amazing social lives at unmatchable prices to go to a more expensive school just because it isn't grade 13?

Because my parents have the money to send me to an amazing private university? I also have the option of UPitt, but they dont have my major.

first off this was hardly adressed at you. There are A LOT of people that think this on this board and at my school. Look back into my posts and you can see I asked this same quesiton the other day. Also reread my post, I specifically said that if someone wants a private education that is a valid reason. An unvalid reason would be just because it is grade 13. If you disagree with me than i guess we will have to. An extreme example is the person who was contemplating going to a different state's school, which is considered worse, and paying more just because it isn't grade 13.

edit: After reading all the responses i see that you got some serious heat for basically nothing. Again I didn't direct it at you at all. I actually started to write it after reading redski's post about giving up UVA. It wasn't even directed at him, it just made me think.

Cheapseats, you make a great point. I have a lot of friends who absolutely REFUSE to go to UMD. My reasons for not particularily wanting to go there are not only that it's 'grade 13' (unfortunately my parents seem to think they are and can't be convinced otherwise). It is, however, something I factored in. I'm starting to get a little worn down, frankly, living here. When I visited UMD, although it has thousands of undergrads, I still saw a person I knew around every corner. I don't want that. I feel like I need a clean start. I know I can get that at UMD, but it's a mental thing, you know? It's difficult to explain, I guess. That, and I worked my butt off to get straight As, and now I'm going to the school where somebody with half my GPA also got accepted to? Maybe I can have the same oppurtunities graduating from UMD's journalism school as if I had graduated from Northwestern, but it makes you feel like all of those years of torturing yourself were for nothing, a feeling that isn't exactly condusive to academic productivity. Again, silly, but I can't help what I feel. There is a practical side to decisions about your life, but sometimes that isn't the only thing to consider.

And although I prefer to go someplace else, if I don't get a scholarship that just won't be possible. I'm not saying I'd never go to UMD, because I probably will, the way things are looking, but if I had the money I would love to live in Southern California, away from here, this place, studying at UCLA under a palm tree. If only...

Cheapseats, I see your point. But the "grade 13" factor was a minor one in influencing my decision not to go to UVa. For one, until this past fall I have lived my entire life in Virginia and naturally wanted new surroundings (UVa itself is an hour's drive from my place). Another was that I am an engineering major, and UVa's E-school wasn't very impressive to me in terms of facilities and equipment. In fact, had I decided to stay in-state I would've for sure gone to Virginia Tech instead for their engineering school.

As for grade 13, only 18 out of 587 seniors in my HS were accepted to UVa, including my best friend from hs. I was the only accepted person not to attend at the end.

Well luckily i have that opportunity, and like you, i want a fresh start. Living in the 'Burbs for all my life, i want to experience life in a great city like Boston.

Great point actually. I have confirmed at UMD, i think it is the same thing as PSU just in a different state. I hate the idea of me getting good grades and kids with lower stats getting in. I just feel my time was wasted when I could have just gotten the solid b than try for the borderline A- at the end of a quarter. My friend and I were talking about this, satisfaction we should and I got is that I did get into the UMD scholars program and then I got into one of the top 4 hardest programs to get into with the business scholars program. It is a program with only 70 students per year and it is rewarding. I also was a direct admit to the business school so that also is something that was only accomplished due to my efforts.

Now you said that you got into UMD journalism. That is an LEP program with great contacts in the DC area. I want to pick up journalism just due to how many opportunities are offered. The LEP programs are harder to get into, the average SAT for the business school was a 1360. If you got into UCLA OOS you should know also that people got in that did less work from In state and even then it is amazingly hard to get into. The middle 50% for SATs for UCLA is 1180-1410 so an LEP program with an average of a 1360 shouldn't be disgustingly worse.

Good luck and keep us updated. I am sure you will make the right choice. I am happy with UMD. I talked about the journalism school here <a href="http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=173624%5B/url%5D">http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=173624</a> on the Maryland board. Maybe it can be helpful.

TUFTS

I can't handle the pressure nor weather. Nice school though, but ah, I would hang myself!

My top "never" list

Ohio State-half my school goes here (more people from my school apply here than any other school). Ugh...even with 35,000 undergrads, I'd fear way too many familiar faces

New York University-I hate it. I just do. I don't have logical reasons for this one.

any "tech" school like MIT, caltech, Olin- Even though my future college, case western, is science-leaning, it's not so utterly focused on engineering like these tech schools.
