Schools

Going into Senior year this year and the college process is in full swing. I am interested in studying business, not completely sure on the type but mainly considering finance, business administration, and international business and considering minoring in a language if I do end up doing international business, Anyway I have a list of schools I’m considering, but don’t want to overlook any and am asking all of you for ideas. I’ve posted more detailed stats in a previous post if you would want to check out, but a very brief description is I have a 93.8 GPA in mostly honors, and 3 A.P.'s and I have a 28 act, played multiple sports, am in many clubs, and many more extracurricular activities including national honors society, global honors award, jv lacrosse MVP. My limitations are the school must be on the East Coast no more south than South Carolina, as I live in A suburb outside NYC. Finance is definitely in consideration, Opinions on South Carolina, Penn St, Maryland, Binghamton, Providence, Umass Amherst, Clemson, and other schools to consider?

Run the Net Price Calculator on each school’s web site. Assume you will get no financial aid for any out of state public U.

Bentley University. Elon University. University of Richmond (although your ACT may be on the low side for them).

You might get merit $ at South Carolina, perhaps $8,500 - $13,500 off the $30,000 annual tuition. Note that the International Business major there is difficult to get into unless you are admitted as a freshman into the Honors College (avg ACT is 31-34 so you are on the low side). You should be fine for other business majors, though.

Possibly some small merit ($5,000?) at UMDCP. None at Penn State. Not familiar enough with the others to comment.

Is your Catholic HS Jesuit? Have you considered Loyola Maryland in Baltimore? Really strong business and you might be eligible for merit. You also might want to look at St. Joseph’s in Philadelphia.

Temple’s Fox School of Business is excellent. While your stats are more than fine for admission to Temple overall, I don’t know if the B school is more selective.

Any plans to take the ACT again? A higher score would definitely help with merit scholarships.

My high school is Christian Brothers, and I have checked out Loyola, I didn’t know it was a strong business school, and I will definitely look into it more, but I didn’t love how small it was or the absence of Greek Life, and strong athletic teams. I do plan on retaking the ACT, but am unsure if I will do much better. My best case scenario would definitely be South Carolina Honors program. Is there anyway I could make it in, with my current ACT?

The SC Honors College app is up on their website. Looks like this year’s class is lucky: Past years’ applications had 5 or 6 essays rather than just the 2 prompts listed for this year. If you are planning to apply to S Carolina anyway, absolutely take the time to complete the Honors College application. It is my understanding that this app is heavily considered in SCHC admissions decisions so be sure to take the time to write compelling essays and to find two good recommenders.

USC also has a program called Capstone (no add’l application–you are automatically considered) that has some nice features that you might be eligible for if the Honors College doesn’t work out. Plus, you can apply for the Int’l Business major as a sophomore even if you aren’t in the Honors College; it’s just that you have to complete for a spot, and a number of them will be taken up by students who were auto-admits as Honors students (although they have to meet certain GPA conditions to stay in the program).

Sounds like you prefer larger schools with sports and Greek life. Maybe U of Delaware? I’ll mention Temple again, too, as according to their merit scholarship list you’d be eligible for $14,000/year (net tuition cost of about $26,000).

Two other schools that are small but that financially may be good bets for you are Univ of Scranton (Jesuit, should offer you merit–maybe $15,000+/year to bring you around $25,000) and LaSalle University (your stats are right on the cusp for their full tuition merit scholarship, and LaSalle is a Christian Brothers school so your HS may be a deciding factor). Neither of these might be what you envision; but in order to get serious merit $$, your stats need to be better than those of most other students applying, which means you have to move down the selectivity list a bit.

Any chance for need-based financial aid, or are you solely looking for merit?

Probably not I am upper middle class. I have two siblings also in college though, so I will need some merit aid as I don’t want to pay over 40k. I will definitely look into the Capstone program, as I hadn’t heard of it, and will definitely apply to honors as that is my goal. I have considered Udell, but wasn’t sure their business school is what I am looking for. Other schools I am considering are James Madison University, Elon University, Providence College, and Bentley. How are their business schools? Would I be in reach for honors college or merit at any of those schools?

<<< Finance is definitely in consideration,>>>

How much will your parents pay each year for YOUR education? Ask them, please don’t guess. What are they SAYING about how much they’ll pay?

They have told me around 40k, obviously the less the better.
