Just a note that they accept a lot more than 300 to get at the final class of 300. Not sure what the yield is but they may accept 600 or even more.
Still, applications have gone up significantly over the last few years...wow.

Yeah.. like I knew they must accept more than that to get the 300 yield, but I'm sure glad I saw that 4000 figure AFTER I got my letter. When I was in limbo I was only counting on being against like 2000. That's awesome for them to really get their pick of kids.

Sandmitch, You seem to be one of the most informed people regarding SHC... I just received my acceptance yesterday and am debating about whether to choose going to SHC or to a private university where they have my major (Actuarial Science) and where I would probably get a full ride. With the way the economy is right now, it's hard to turn down an offer like that although I am torn because I have heard such great things about SHC and the actuarial science program at PSU. Have you visited yet and met with anyone at SHC and do you have any advice for me?

Hey matt, I have visited SHC now 2 times, been up to Penn State a whole bunch more. I would be happy to help you, but would need to know the private university you are considering, as it definitely affects the decision.

In general, as long as the private university is a decent/well known one, I would say take the full ride. You would be saving so much money over the long run, and at most sacrificing 2-4 thousand in starting salary for your job (and that is comparing PSU w/ a lower tier private university). With room board, etc over 4 years, you'd be saving yourself 60,000-80,000, and that is huge.

But you would be sacrificing alot of the fun that comes with a PSU education such as THON and football games and State Patties Day, and the parties, etc. Then when you factor in Schreyer's, you get the added distinction of the honors college, the study abroad opportunities, the close knit group of Schreyer's students, etc. Of course, depending on which school you are talking about, they may have those study abroad opportunities too.

It really does depend on what the private school offers. If they have a good Actuarial Science program, good study abroad programs, are well respected, and you could see yourself being happy there, then I think the full ride factor has to sway you that way.

But at the same time, if the private school doesn't have study abroad programs, doesn't have the ECs/fun factor you are looking for, and doesn't compare to PSU's actuarial program, which is stellar btw...I am going to be a business major, and if you have yet to visit Smeal, it is incredible (#1 business school facilities of any college in the US according to all major rankings), then I would choose Schreyer's.

If you have any other questions, feel free to PM me. Although if you want your questions answered by experts, you can ask the deal via the accepted students facebook, or the dean's blog, or ask current students via the same methods.

Thanks, Sandmitch, The private school is Robert Morris University -- I have been accepted into their Patriots Honors Program which does have travel abroad programs and many great things about it in regard to research and opportunities. Their actuarial science program prepares students for the first 4 tests like Penn State and is pretty well known and regarded pretty highly. They also would accept all my AP classes. This decision is tough because my parents have told me that they don't want money to be the biggest factor in my decision. I know that I wouldn't be considering Penn State if I hadn't got into the SHC because I can't imagine myself at such a huge school. I guess I need to go visit and talk with some of the professors.

Sorry Sandlansd, I got your name wrong in my previous post!

Wow, congrats to all who got accepted. I didn't, but I don't feel bummed out. As long as I'm saying "We are Penn State!" in August, I'm cool.

"Just a note that they accept a lot more than 300 to get at the final class of 300. Not sure what the yield is but they may accept 600 or even more."

I've read in the past that the yield for Schreyer is around 35% (roughly the same as PSU in general), which means they probably accept around 800-900 people each year.

Does anyone have a sense for the break down of the relative number of Western PA students vs. Eastern PA students?
