Schreyer decisions

I finally picked up my mail and found out that I was accepted!!

OOS--NY
34 ACT
SAT I 1460/2190 SAT II 780 770 740
GPA- 95 at a competitive school on LI (upward trend)
ECs: Student Gov't officer, DECA officer, Spanish officer, Baseball, Internship at a Hedge Fund

Does anyone know exactly how good the schreyers/smeal combo is for landing a job at one of the big banks on wall street? I've read that Schreyers students are targeted by Goldman Sachs but I am still skeptical as to how many students are placed at these big firms, and how much weight the Schreyers name carries. Any more info would be great!

Oh and I was wondering what other schools you all applied to...

I applied to: PSU, Penn (ED-->deferred), Cornell, Georgetown, UVA, Northwestern, Michigan, Emory, Wash U, Binghamton and Wisconsin

our situation seems pretty similar nyjeff...PSU, Penn ED deferred, Cornell, Dartmouth, UVA, Emory, Northwestern, Wash U, Brown, Columbia, Michigan (accepted waiting on honors program)

nyjeff - We have asked this question (about big firms like GS) since my son is a business major. We also did some research (looking online and asking students).
From what we can tell, Schreyer has relationships with Goldman (through an alumni scholar) and Merrill (through Schreyer himself and many contacts). The best and brightest business students DO get a shot at internships and jobs at both. Doesn't just happen automatically though. For example, kids who excel in the investment club (they have a mock trading room) would get a look. As would kids who step up to the many leadership positions available on campus.
So...it's not quite like an Ivy in terms of opportunities to enter the elite big firms. But there ARE opportunities for those who are willing to do the work to shine. And as more top kids graduate and go on to these firms, the opportunities will continue to open up.

Still nothing in South Eastern PA. Anybody else still waiting?

buck0890,
the schreyer office told me that they did not mail everything at once, they mailed a batch Friday, saturday, yesterday, today and tomorrow. Rejections and acceptances are going out in the same batch. So you will be getting a letter either way. So no news is .... no news. Good luck!

My son has not heard anything either in SW PA and I actually called this afternoon and asked if they send letters either way. I was told that some acceptance letters went out Friday, some Monday and some today. So we'll keep checking the mail.

Good luck.

nyjeff06,
I am a current scholar, and from what I can tell you getting a job is not going to be a problem for anyone graduating from the program. That also applys to graduate school. For instance in my major, civil engineering, there has been 100% placement of scholars applying to grad school. In fact every single one was given some kind of fellowship. That means four years and a thesis and they are not going to pay a cent for grad school and will most likely get a stipend to attend. These were to the best schools in the nation too. Cornell, Umich, MIT, Stanford, ect. Besides if you know anything about Penn State in general, it is that we have to largest Alumni network which is one of the most important things for getting a job. There is a common bond that will tie you son to other grads for the rest of his life. Penn Staters stick together and try to surround themselves with other Penn Staters.

Has anyone else still not heard?

Regarding the party atmosphere, it is present, without a doubt...mainly in parts of downtown State College. I am a non-partier and am still enjoying myself immensely at PSU and in the SHC. There are plenty of non-partiers; it is just a matter of finding out who they are in the beginning. Don't shy away from the initial social activities that the SHC hosts, as those tend to be great friendship-forming events.

Atherton has a higher percentage of SHC students, but Simmons still has plenty. If you happen to get annoying (read: loud) people in your hall, you can always report them, as there's nothing wrong with that...with 24 hour courtesy hours and official quiet hours from 8 pm to sometime in the morning on weekdays and 10 pm to sometime in the morning on weekends. I don't want to make the dorms sound awful, as they are far from that, but the mere fact is that you just don't know exactly who'll you get as your roommate / floormates. Most of the people I've talked with are very content with their floor/roommates, and while I may not be thrilled with my roommate (who is a scholar as well), lol, the floor has been very nice and I haven't had any problems with noise from them.

Just recieved my acceptance letter today.

In State, Biology Major
1500 SAT
1/98 at a Catholic School
Student Body President, Varsity Track and Soccer, Governor's School

My brother is currently in Schreyer, and I think the whole "party scene" is what you want to make of it.

If anybody else who got in and is considering going would to talk, don't heistate to PM me.

heh.. still waiting for my letter

tellallyour friends,
S is instate and waiting for his notice too. He got an email from PSU today which said they will have all mailed by end of week. S just told me that he had applied close to the Nov. 30th deadline. So maybe that is why his is at the tail end of the mailings. Did you apply towards the deadline too?

I applied on the 1st of November... maybe it was on the bottom of the pile?

I just got my acceptance letter!!
I'm really excited, for awhile I was thinking that I wasn't in because I hadn't heard, so I'm really relieved.

Good luck to everyone still waiting!
