Accepted with an additional $6,000 per year for a departamental scholarship that really surprised me because I've heard that Penn State does not give out much scholarship money.

congrats to everyone.

ACCEPTED:

1520, #2/570, lots of ECs, active community service, and good essays

Hey, what department was that $6000 scholarship for?

just wondering..........do all SHC scholars get $3500? I thought it was $2500

They up-ed it this year.

Engineering.

Everyone in Schreyers gets $3,500. It used to be $2,500, but apparently, they upped it by $1,000 this year. My guess is that this is most likely to offset increasing costs of tuition.

The kid that ranked 6 out of 575 in our class was rejected today, with good SATs and stellar GPA, most likely because he didn't take any SAT II's.

^ I'm not sure that the SHC requires SAT II scores. Obviously, it likely can't hurt to send them if they're high, but there is no mention of SAT II scores on their website under the first year admissions process section (at least as far as I can tell). Dr. Stoller (selection coordinator) did mention at the last Scholars Day (10/10/2005) that applicants may include a photo-copy of their AP score reports in their application packet if they wish...

Maybe essays had a big impact? I got in, and I don't think my stats are stellar, but my essays were pretty good.

Victoryismine9 ~ What are your stats? Why do you think you got extra money? And was it for one year or each year?

Reasonabledad, my D also got a departmental scholarship (engineering) in addition to Schreyer. Several factors may have been involved - her stats are good, she attended the PSU Engineering Open House last year and went to the Society of Women Engineers breakfast. She also took PSU Math 230 (Vector & multivariable calculus) this past fall and completed with a grade of A. Though the letter did not mention it, she also applied as a Leonhard Scholar (specific to Engineering). The application was on-line, the deadline was early February.

OhMother ~ That's great! I am just curious about what factors PSU/Schreyers are using to award the scholarships. Son was interveiwed for a scholarship, but didn't receive anything extra...trying to figure it out.

Daughter #1 is PSU sophomore. She rec'd departmental scholarship, but was advised by letter in mid-March. She did NOT apply to Schreyer. I'm not sure if students accepted to Schreyer will be considered for any other scholarships, or "what you see is what you get". I think Schreyer has their own financial aid officers - you could give them a call.

Good thought: I'll suggest it to S, who is in charge.

That is to say, he is in charge, and I just pay the bills!

Congrats again to your daughter.

:-)

^^ You all know what that means ^^

yay congrats

Congratulations all! :)

I don't understand how or why I was rejected.

SAT: 2310 (C: 750, M: 760, W: 800)
SAT IIs - Math Level 2: 710, Lit: 730
GPA: 4.333 W in a tough Catholic school in PA, no class rank

I'm not devastated; ND is my clear number one choice.

Congrats to all who got in!

Wow, that's a surprise. Maybe call them? I don't know how I made it in, frankly.

Bill_smear- they don't consider writing so your score is a 1520. That's still very high but not as good as the 2310 makes it seem. Also, the 4.333 W isn't that high depending on how your school weights. I have around that which is like a 3.6UW, which is kind of low.

Based on numbers alone it looks like you should have gotten in, but if your UW GPA is indeed around 3.6 then your numbers aren't enough to pull you in if other factors were not good as well (essays, recs)

I'm pretty sure its a 1510 and not a 1520 :-)

bill,
Wow, I'm surprised too. Maybe your EC's or essays were not as strong as your numerical statistics? But who knows. I hope you have good news from ND!
