SCI Information for Class of 2010

For those of us planning to use the Student Computer Initiative (SCI) to buy your laptop, here's preliminary information:

http://www.princeton.edu/sci/help/faq.htm

It seems that OIT will be mailing us our netID and password sometime this June.

June?!?! Hooray! I thought it would be in July or something.

Word on the street is that it's late May or early June. One of the people on the Princeton 2010 Myspace emailed about a week ago, and they got a reply that said we'd be getting them soon.

Ah, I hope you're right, quirkily. The OIT site says mid-June.

Oh no!
(1) This year's offerings for Apple have been discontinued. If you are a senior interested in buying an Apple computer, we recommend you visit the Apple Education Store.
(referring to the Macbook/Macbook Pro)
Ughhh...I'll have to spend, like, $2500 buying the computer and software now...

Never mind:

Dear Jason,

Thank you for your inquiry.

The Apple computers will be available when the SCI Store opens on June 13th. It is recommended that you purchase your computer via SCI.

Please reply to this e-mail should you have any questions.

Regards,
Brad

it's nice to know the prices aren't even published.

just buy a PC.

nooooooo, never

Prices aren't quite as excellent as I expected...I think I'm going to buy from the Apple Store instead (since I'm getting an iPod as well...$180 off of an iPod is not so bad), and get my software through underhanded methods.

yea well you see, it seems all these colleges want to charge you a crap load of cash on top of even more cash. :p

what happened to giving back to the community? you know, it's just like google... theeir do no evil is gone...

I heard that even if you don't get the software pre-loaded onto a new laptop throuh SCI, you can still get the Endnotes/Mathematica/Matlab software through Princeton. Does anyone know anything about this? Is the software discounted if you buy it through the school?

talk about giving back to the community...if duke gives their froshies free ipods...

then again, princeton does take a lot off the tuition, so i can't complain ;)

you can download matlab free from princeton (once you get on campus). Mathematica is $100, and I'm not sure about endnote, although the library has a subscription to the web based refworks, which ive heard is very simillar (and free)

Endnote was available through the software store for something like $18, and Mathematica is $28. You can find a link on the OIT page (--> students --> purchasing software).

Last year, a guy from my school was accepted to Princeton and decided to matriculate there. Not only did he get a full-ride, but also Princeton gave him a free Powerbook and Ipod. O.o

Princeton said that if you got excess outside scholarships, you could use that money towards the purchase of a personal computer. Does that have to be through SCI?

Somehow I doubt that story.

elphaba88: I emailed them and they said it has to be through SCI, which is unfortunate. I don't really like their configurations.

guys those SCI things are a RIP OFF. a bunch of people trying to get your money

you can get that dell $400 cheaper, and we're talking the site. i lost all respect for that.

Did you factor in things like the warranty and the software? I calculated the cost of the same laptop (adding 1GB RAM and AppleCare) at the Apple Store for the Macbook Pro and the SCI store came out ~$100 cheaper.

I'm probably going to be forced to buy from the SCI store because it's a lot cheaper with outside scholarships.
