I applied to and was accepted at both the Mellon College of Science and the College of Humanities and Social Science. CMU also offered me admission into Science and Humanities Scholars program. Does anyone have any information about the program? It looks like a really good deal, especially for someone like me wishing to double in cognitive science and biology. How many people are offered this program; how many people usually accept the offer? What have been people's experiences with the program? I'm very interested in this offer and would like more information.

bump

I also received the same offer to be a part of the Science and Humanities Scholars Program and would like to know more about it.

Out of curiosity - would either of you be willing to post your stats?

I posted my GPA and ACT on the decisions thread, if you're really interested, I can PM them to you.

Just bumping this up again too (lol)... I'd really like some info.

I assume this is what you're talking about?

http://www.cmu.edu/interdisciplinary/

It's an opportunity to study in two schools -- to pursue majors in Science or Humanities as well as Art.

No it is this:
http://www.cmu.edu/shs/

I think I got into this program also but the packet did not include ANY information sheet about it! What happened anyone know?

Wait, so if i choose to major in Physics and Economics, would this be a good course of action for me?

Oh, and to whoever was asking about stats.

2280 SAT (790 M, 750 CR, 740 W)
3.8 GPA
good recs, essays, etc.
High AP scores all around (which is what I think got me in the program). 5's on AP Eng Lang, Physics B, World History and US History. 4 in Chemistry.

Did all of you who where accepted to the Scholars program apply to both MCS and CHSS?

No, D only applied to HSS, but in her essay wrote that she was interested in the joint psych/bio program--perhaps that is why she was invited (along with good stats?)

My D only applied to College of Science, didnot express any interest in Social Sciences but was still offered this joint program. Waiting to here about the financial aid package.

She is interested in pre-med and I don't know if Carnegie is a good school for pre-med! Any ideas?

Hey! Congrats to all who got into the Scholars program! I found out from the Status page that I got admission into Mellon College of Science. just wanted to know whether you received the notification about getting into the Scholars program via email or through the admissions packet...

The joint scholars program offer came with the admissions packet - same FAT envelope. It is not listed online.

Thanks so much!:)

Congrats on everyone getting in... now could someone please tell us a bit more about the program. Like, how many people get it, why they get it, and what their reactions are to the program. Does it really make life much easier for physics/economics people or biology/psychology people? How's the residence for members of SHS? Things like that would be much appreciated... the nice little pamphlet CMU sent out about the program was helpful, but I think student/parent reactions would be even nicer.

I'm not in it, but I can tell you that the SHS freshmen usually live in Morewood E tower, Morewood Gardens, or New House, which are all close to campus.

bump (10 char)

My S (with an interest in Math and Econ; applied to MCS and Humanities) has been offered a spot on the SHS. This seems like a fasicnating program and in all liklihood, he will wind up at CMU (subject to final negotiations re money!)

We are visiting CMU later this week, so I will post anythig I find. All I know now is what is on the website.

He also is interested in doing a 2nd degree with Tepper, particularly because he intends to pursue computational finance. (He has /will have AP credits from 9 AP classes, so this might be feasible in 4 years. But, he has not applied to Tepper yet...). Any input on either the SHS / the comp finance program / 2nd degree with Tepper most appreciated.
