I'm a high school sophomore thinking of going into premed and am also really into science/math I am wondering what science-y ECs are there that I can do? (clubs, honor societies, other groups, conventions, programs, contests, etc.?)

I’m in the same boat. Does your school have a math club? A science club? If you’re not in them, join. If they don’t exist at your school, create them! Research some of the local competitions and enter them, though you may have to wait until next year since most of the competitions have ended for this school year already. Start some projects of your own to work on over the summer extensively and maybe you can enter into the Intel or Siemens. Good luck!

I have been go through the same route and am now a Senior. I think a really helpful one (in terms of admissions) is Research. No one can argue if you spend your summer doing research and not only have the potential to co-publish, but also the chance to win good awards. So try to contact professors in a local university and set up a position for yourself over summer (if you can research in the same lab for two years, you can get a good rec and it shows dedication to a degree).

You can also try hospital volunteering for some service hours and to gain exposure to the medical field which you want to be in. But have a good amount of hours, at least crack 100 if you want to show commitment.

Clubs, feel free to join whatever interests you. Things like Science Olympiad or joining your school’s math team (you have the chance to win awards in these kind of things if you’re dedicated and have some talent) are def. things to consider. There are exams like AMC, UNSCO, USABO where if you do well enough, you can be recognized.

These are some ideas to get you started, good luck with your pursuits.

wow these are good ideas!
