I'm currently a freshmen in MCB major in the college of L&S but interested in Engineering, particularly BioE and Mechanical E. My current classes are chem 1A, math 1B, Rhetoric R1B & a seminar class. Telebears is coming up so I'm considering taking either Engineering 7 or 10 in my next semester.
Which one would you recommend?

It doesn't really matter; you'll have to take both eventually.

I think E10 is more about engineering whereas E7 is Matlab, which is computer programming.

would you be transferring to COE? cause i'm extremely interested in transferring from L&S to COE.

vicissitudes: thanks!! is there any other lowerdivision class for engineering students besides E7 & E10?

misterreach: yeah, that's one of my plans so far. I have to go drop by the office to find out more though.

Ah, good ole BioE....haven't you heard that this major sucks? Yes, the administration is trying to make the major looks good (the old curriculum is truly embarrassing btw), but don't be fooled. The fact is many BioE classes are new, random, and poorly structured; I can count the good ones with half my hand. If you're interested in BioE sort of stuff, do a minor for it and major in MechE.

pikasof: Here's the bioE curriculum - http://bioeng.berkeley.edu/program/bioemajor.php

They changed the curriculum just this year, so you have more choices in engineering electives. There's a bunch to choose from. E45 and EE40/100 used to be prereqs, but now you can choose other courses to take. I think E45 is a useful class to take. But anyway, those engineering classes have prereqs and people tend to take them their second year. For first years, people generally take their Math 1-series, Physics 7-series, Chem, and E7 or E10.

HypnosX: I've heard this argument before and I am somewhat inclined to agree. BioE is tied for the hardest major to get into, yet out of all the engineering majors, BioE graduates make the least! (~$44,000 compared to $50,000-60,000) The BioE major isn't even ABET accredited right now, I believe.

But the advantages to BioE are first, if you're interested in engineering but also want to do pre-med, BioE has a good curriculum for that. Second, if you major in MechE, you'll have to take a lot of upper-div ME courses that you may not be interested in.
