I was just wondering WHY Brown wants chemistry, comp sci, physics and engineering students to submit the additional essays. They want you to justify why want to study that field of science… but how did they chose these fields only (i.e. why not bio, biochem… or even nonscience fields)? I’m assuming they are trying to expand those departments. If that’s the case, is it easier to get in if you are indicate an interest in one of these fields and submit the additional essays?

This info won’t influence what I put on my application, I’m just curious and would appreciate some answers from anyone who actually knows the inside scoop. Thanks!

Yeah, I have some of the same questions. I think Brown is definitely aiming to expand their hard science programs. I went to an info session and asked who reads them and the speaker told me that the regular admissions committees read them and sometimes the science chair of the respective departments. I think if you show passion for a science, it can only help. I filled it out for Chemistry... I guess we'll find out if it had any effect in four days!

Actually, I forgot to ask whether we had to do that (I'm applying PLME + Brown ED), in case we didn't get PLME and but got Brown (and I was going to have a biophysics major). I completed essays for the science topics, but I guess you're right...it may not be necessary
