Science GPA..Northwestern

Hard as I try I can't seem to pull my BCPM GPA up this year. It's hovering around a 3.67 right now and by the time I'm done with the pre-med core at the end of the summer I'm estimating it will be around a 3.6.

My overall GPA is strong (right now 3.89) and by the end of the summer I don't think I'll have trouble keeping it above a 3.8. I'm a sophomore now leaning towards applying at the end of next year (ie: not taking a year off) and I'm trying to assess how I'm doing.

How do med schools evaluate a fairly strong cumulative GPA in light of a weaker science GPA? I know they're both important, but I don't really now how they're evaluated and if either one is considered more. Also, I know people have debated this and I'm not looking to start it up again, but will med schools recognize the rigor/difficult curves at a school like Northwestern? Any input would be great. Thanks.

The answer is that “both are evaluated,” and in the context of an application. A 3.9/3.6/27 shows that you just can’t handle science. A 3.9/3.6/38 shows that you just had very tough classes. Combine these with your other science accomplishments, etc. and you’ll start to see that factors influence each other; they’re not just separate items that fulfill some kind of points value.

have you talked to the guys over at UAAC yet? One of the advisers over there mention that comparing the BCPM gpa of northwestern students to the rest of the nation for students who matriculated into med school, Northwestern generally has a lower science gpa. Its well known that NU Orgo is tougher than most of the other schools.

Great thanks for the replies
