Science internships for high school students?

Are there really things like summer programs at universities for high school students to intern at and do things like research? I'm aiming for a chemical engineering major, or pharmacy if that doesn't work. I live in New England and I've tried to do some Googling around, but what are these programs like?

No one in my school ever talks about these things for some reason, and my parents are immigrants so they don't know much (although they try) about the opportunities here. Any info and advice would be appreciated!

Because they’re normal, maybe? I didn’t know high school students could even get internships until recently. I don’t think it’s common.

For the record, if something costs a lot of money it’s not going to help much for college admissions. Free selective programs/internships are best. Internships are usually free, and sometimes they pay you, but university programs are usually expensive.

Well I know it’s not common, but knowing some of the overachievers in my school, you’d be surprised too. I’m not expecting it to help me much in college admissions, I just want to get my feet wet. I’m just a little impatient to find out what my future careers could really be like.

Thank you for links though, that’s exactly what I was looking for :D

I asked a clinical biotech firm if I could shadow there. I did so for a week and though I didn’t technically work there, I got a pretty good idea of what goes on. See if you can do that to get your foot in the door for an internship (though don’t expect to be paid). It got my foot in the door to do some high school research at the local university through the people I met, so give it a shot.

^^ My step dad went to undergrad and medical school at Brown University, do you think that kind of connection would help?

Definitely. Ask if he knows anybody that owns a business or is in the administration of a business in your area. My dad actually helped me out as well.

I mean, you could just cold-email if you wanted, but you might have to send out a lot of emails before you get something. Biotech firms will probably be easier to get in to since they are usually smaller and more open. ChemEs will mostly work at large plants owned by big companies, and they might not want a high schooler with no credentials running around, even if he/she is really smart.
