Science Lab Kits

Has anyone ever used the science lab kits that some of the distance learning programs use? What do you think of them? How do they work?

for bio we ordered a kit from At Home Science
referred to them through some college in Colorado i found on the net
didn't take a distance course but found the kit contained everything necessary for ap bio, pretty good quality, self-contained as advertised.
microscopes can be found at craigslist or e-bay or . . . .

There are several different things available. Some folks sell lab kits to go along with certain curriculum, like Apologia: http://www. home4schoolgear.com and Home Science Tools We have used both these companies and been very pleased. These are a great help in getting the labs done with your high school science curriculum.

We have also used virtual lab simulations for labs not possible at home for Chem, AP Chem and AP Biology. We used Biology Labs Online and Virtual ChemLab. As someone with a biology/chemistry degree, I thought these were a fantastic supplement. The ability to repeat the lab many times changing variables, greatly adds to understanding.

I checked out these links. Great suggestions! Thanks!

Can you give me the link to biology labs online and Virtual ChemLab? Are they located at Biology Labs On-Line and Virtual ChemLab Community respectively?

Yes, both are published by Pearson. Biology Labs Online is a web-based application, while the Virtual ChemLab is a CD-based program. Both are excellent. Unfortunately, Pearson is very random in how they respond to homeschoolers. I have had them tell me that it was impossible to order a single teacher and single student edition (not true, as they proved a few hours later), that homeschoolers couldn't order (again, not true), and that homeschoolers have no problem whatsoever ordering (alas, also not true). If the first person you talk to there doesn't help you, just keep asking to speak to their supervisor until you get someone with a clue.

Hate to sound so negative, but I've ordered from them several times and each time, it's been a hassle.

i always dealt with pearson's homeschool supervisor - yes, they actually have one. only had to speak w/ her once. issues invariably arose but were handled speedily. will continue to look thru old e-mails to find contact info.
