Okay, so today I went into my state science olympiad competition just doing it for fun since my school is not competitive and does not force us to prepare. The night before I looked up a few things online but that was my sole preparation. Well, I came out with a 3rd in Health Science and a 9th in Disease Detectives. I'm incredibly suprised I did so well because last year I came out with no medals and definitely more prep work. So my question is, does this actually look good to colleges or is it more of a "filler" award?

I would probably mention it because it is STATE, not regionals. ANd being in state means that your school probably won silver or gold in regionals, which is impressive too. If you have free space to put under the “awards” sections, I don’t think it would hurt to put it.

Well done, I was drawn into it at the last minute and we got 2nd place regionals for Chem Lab.

I’m not sure how much it helps on apps.

I did Chem Lab and it was killer. The titration lab was easy but we had this written test that had some questions involving neutralization and something to do with moles that I hadn’t seen in my life.

ooooh sci olymps!

uhm hmmm there were seven teams at this unofficial regional one i went to todayyy… none of us bothered to prepare becauseee… hmmm… we suck? we’ll prepare for states, though.

i think my partner and i came in first in chem lab. second or third in cell bio. probably seventh in disease detectives and health science.

lol we just signed up randomly for health science. right before it started i asked the team behind us, “so what’s health science again?” and they laughed. i was like, “no seriously.” and they were like, “uhhh circulatory and skeletal system” and we were just like “FFFFFFFFUUUUU”

My partner and I got first place at regionals in Five Star Science. Unfortunately advancement to states is based on the school and since no one else one anything we couldn’t go any farther. Is it like this in all states?

yes. that is how it like in all states, it is based on a team evaluation, not individual.

but, yes, what happens if i did it in both 8th and 9th grade, should i put it down for college both years? even regionals? or just state?

Nice job!
Yes, you should definitely mention it. Colleges will look very favorable at that. My school has never made it to states because its calculated as a team basis and we just cant get into top 2 but i have won 2nd in astronomy and 1st in forensics and i am planning on putting it on my college apps.

When I first saw the title, I thought you meant the actual medals. But I still want to comment that the medals are HUGE. Maybe it’s just in my state…

wow. astronomy wasn’t my strong point. i loved doing the biology and earth science events like awesome aquifers, don’t bug me, disease detectives, and what not. and qualified for nationals, but didn’t place there. would it bad to say “i made it to nationals, but got nothing”?

I want to complain that all the medals are bronze and that the ribbons are all that change color. Lame.

Yeah my partner’s taking AP Chem so he knew all the answers.

We have regionals on Monday. I just got my egg-o-naut to work today, and I’m really excited. I need to study for cell bio and experimental design though.

I have to say I’m pretty jealous of the schools that can practically walk into states, because I live in a pretty competitive region. We have two schools that almost always make it to the top 10 in nationals, along with a lot of other great schools. However, I’m still confident we’ll do well this year.

…

Some state like mine allow those who win 1st place in 1 or more competitions to advance to the state level in whatever competition(s) they won 1st place in.
