Science Olympiad

what events is everyone doing?
this is the place for science nerds to get together.

I am doing Disease Detectives, Ecology, and Food Science (if that's the name...I forget the exact event titles).

Im doing forensics, circuits, all around, and watching the juniors on my team to make sure they dont screw up b/c im team captain

I'm doing health science, compute this, and fermi questions. I wish I could do a chem event but no luck all the seniors took them. I hate the kids in AP Chem.

woot woot. scioly's coming up. i'm going to do designer genes, write it do it, and don't bug me (yay lol)

hypothetically speaking, if you had a science fair on the same day as science olympiad and you were the team captain, would you go to the science fair or science olympiad?

Remote Sensing and Dynamic Planet

i would do science olympiad over science fair. its so much more fun!

I'm in science olympiad! I'm doing tower, fermi, and physics lab. I think I'm set for physics and fermi.. I cant seem to build a good tower though! My last one was 20 grams and held all the weight, but I hear winning towers go low as 8 or 9 grams at regionals.

health science, fermi questions, storm the castle, robot ramble, scrambler.

yea our team had the same problem with the towers....how can you get them that light?

build events are tough

Designer Genes, Physics Lab, Chemistry Lab, Ecology, Scrambler, and NY Trial Event
(I will be half my school's team, I will be half my school's team, I will be half my school's team . . .)

: | I'm building the tower.
Right now.

The procrastinatin' team du jour.
Our towers stink, btw,
and we don't have the thin type of wood they use,
and it's too late now.
Sad, but true,
we haven't medal...ed..in the regionals for the past, what 20 years?
If ever?

Pathetic, considering we're a fifty-year old district.

Science Olympiad isn't even a club at our school, thanks to budget cuts, XD now, it is just an extension of the science club...: 3

most towers are made of balsa or basswood. balsa is pretty standard (it's less dense, but bass is useful for spots that get a lot of stress, I think) for towers. It's actually not too expensive, about 30 cents for a 3 feet stick. 10 sticks should be enough, so altogether, it should cost about $3. You can usually find it at a local arts/crafts store like AC Moore or Joann Etc. and, yeah, we usually medal once/year.. this is our third year, and I'm sick of losing, so I've been studying like crazy. I'm gonna effing rape everyone.

I do... Circuit Lab, Physics Lab, Practical Problem Solving, Fermi Questions, Ecology, Chem Lab, Compute this

But for states and nationals I am most likely doing... Fermi, Ecology, Practical Problem Solving, Circuit Lab

Last year I joined halfway through the year so all I got for states was Fermi (2nd). Then all I got for nationals was Fermi (13th) and Compute this (19th).

Fermi is the best event ever!!!

i dunno how anyone can do fermi. you must be like a genius or something. the questions they ask are so ramdom! like how many cartwheels does it take to get to California from New york???

that question in quite easy...
it's about 5000 km from NY to CA
5E3 km = 5E6 m
a cartwheel would take up a little over a meter, even more depending on how much of a start one get's before the cartwheel, so we'll say 2 m
5E6/2= 2.5E6
answer is 6 (one million)

questions like that are considered easy

I've competed in many invitationals and I've seen some really insane questions, if anyone wants to hear them I can make a list of some good ones.

Atomic, what state are you from?

Ohio, what about you?

I'm doing Ecology, Write It Do It, and Comute This... was anyone else on this board in Illinois last year?

I'm from New York. At our invitational, we had all of the powerhouses (Fayetteville Manlius, John Jay, Maine Endwell..) of our state. It sort of sucked because we're pretty new, so we ended up coming in 23rd out of 26 :(
