Are there any science programs in California (I'm not willing to travel much, so preferably Bay Area-ish or Northern California) that aren't overly expensive (less than 4K, please) and that rising juniors actually have a chance of getting into? I'm looking at Stanford Earth Sciences and COSMOS right now, but I'm not sure about others.

SIP at UC Santa Cruz might come close to your price point even with housing. http://ucsc-sip.org/ It says it’s mostly for rising seniors, but it sounds like they take some rising juniors.

Young Scholars at UC Davis is about $6K for 6 weeks, so more $$ than you want to spend. Young Scholars Program - UC Davis School of Education;

SPARC at UCB looks quite difficult to get into, but is free (2 weeks). http://sparc-camp.org/

Looks like there are some summer classes for high school students at UCB: http://atdp.berkeley.edu/about/sd/

I don’t know the chances for rising juniors at these. About half the kids at the RMP program at UCSB were rising juniors this past summer. But, that’s a bit of travel and though it’s about $4K for us locals, it’s about $9K with room and board. I know at least one non-local kid stayed with relatives.

I’ve read good things about COSMOS, of course. The Stanford Earth Sciences thing looks good. I hadn’t heard of it, but we aren’t local.

Good luck!

I know about ATDP (although they mainly offer academic classes), as I was thinking of doing it last year; however, if i’m going to spend that much money on academic classes, I might as well take them at the CC. I want to do SIP next summer, as it’s one of the cheapest research programs I’ve seen (there’s always SIMR, but I don’t particularly like health).

SPARC seems pretty cool, though.
