can anybody suggest some decent science research programs or mentors in long island?

Do a search for New York State on this site:
http://www.sciserv.org/stp/

Can you travel into NYC? If yes, try
http://psych.nyu.edu/research/highschool.html
http://www.med.nyu.edu/rusk/healthcareer/

Also...search on Hofstra, CW Post, Adelphi and SUNY Stony Brook websites for specific topics that are of interest to you. Some professors names are likely to come up. Go to the professors web page, and there's usually a list of their research papers. If something they've written seems particularly interesting, read one or two things they've published on the topic you're interested in. (Many public libraries on LI can get you access to most professional journals...especially if they're available on-line.) Contact the professor and tell them you've read their article and you'd like to learn more about their research, and ask if there are any opportunities for a HS student to work on one of their projects.

Good Luck!
