On Monday I was accepted to Walsh and plan on studying STIA. I am really torn between GU and another school, in which I would be working towards a BS in CS in an engineering program. I always thought I wanted to do CS, but I also really love Georgetown. Does anyone have any info on being a STIA major and the careers students end up pursuing? I am really interested in cyber security and software so would I be able to eventually get a job at a tech company or would I need to get a masters in CS after Georgetown? Any information would be greatly appreciated!

Hey, I know this isn’t relevant to your question but I’m also facing a similar dilemma! I got into SFS undeclared, but I plan on studying STIA if I go there. Throughout high school, I have really been involved in foreign language and the sciences, so I thought STIA would be a really good fit for me. However, in the long run, I can see myself pursuing a PhD or MD in the sciences, so I’m not quite sure if STIA is the best program for me. I was admitted into other schools for biology / biomedical engineering and know that going these routes will definitely lead me to getting a PhD or MD, but I really want an open / interdisciplinary undergraduate education.

With STIA, from what I saw, you have the ability to focus on cyber security or something like that? So maybe with the right internships and extracurricular involvement, you will be prepared for a tech job. I also think that it’s cool to hire people from unconventional backgrounds, which is why I find STIA so appealing, but I really don’t know what it is that graduate schools / employers want.

Sorry I didn’t really give any help, just relating to your situation ^^’

This may help. The career center has a list of jobs that are common for each major. STIA is still pretty focused on politics, but a lot of people do pursue cyber security. I don’t know about working for a tech firm–it’d depend on what you want to do and whether or not your desired position requires a masters.

You can also look at the major classes for STIA and see if it’s what you’re looking for: https://sfs.georgetown.edu/stia/
