Science

Wondering if anyone knows how good UPS science programs are, such as Biology? Most know it as a Liberal Arts College.

I am in the same boat, I would like to know about the math program, though. Sorry for hijacking the thread!

My oldest son is a sophomore Bio major at Puget Sound. He already has a environmental research proposal pending for this summer as a result of a current class and professors. Puget Sound professors have been incredibly accessible to him, whether to discuss opening new sections, advise on careers or research, or just talk about life.

Campus jobs are plentiful–he’s been offered more jobs on campus than he can take. Clubs include things like beekeeping where you can get certified as a beekeeper, or volunteer to work as a docent in the on-campus Natural History museum, meaning there are a lot of opportunities to try out different aspects of your studies outside the classroom as well. Stats on graduate schools seem to be very solid and the school has a great reputation. Certainly easy to get to know a lot of professors really well so you’ve got solid recommendations.

Students seem to be more collaborative than competitive. Biology can be a nightmare at some schools as students see everyone as a competitor for med school. Despite a high rate of med-school bound Bio majors, UPS doesn’t seem to have any of that.

I am a parent, so one step removed from the school, but our son a happy, seems to be getting a great education and is definitely getting a ton of other science-related opportunities to build a solid resume at the same time.
