Hey, I am currently a Freshman at HS. I am hoping to major in Math, Physics, and Computer Science in College. What would be the recommended science pathway for High School if you want to major in something I am doing? I am taking Bio currently rn. (Example: Bio → AP Chem → Physics, Bio → Physics → AP Physics, etc.)
It depends upon the standard sequence at your HS,and what options are available. Usually, AP Bio and AP Chem have prereqs. The most common sequence for high-achieving science students is:
Bio–>Chem–>AP Physics 1–>Choice of AP Bio/Chem/Physics C. Some double up on a science and/or add AP CS in junior/senior year, if it can be done without eliminating another core subject.
Covering all three (B,C,P) and then one of them at AP level is relatively standard. Physics C sounds like the best fit given your interests, but you should take whichever interests you most.
CS is sometimes tossed in with “science”. AP CSP, AP CSA, or whatever programming classes your school offers can fit in as electives, but not at the expense of the core science courses.
As @skieurope said: Biology-> chemistry-> AP physics 1 → one from AP chem/ AP physics 2/ AP Bio/ AP physics C.
AP CS principles will expose you to the different fields in CS.
After that, any programming experience and/or Discrete Math will help with CS.
Keep in mind you should be taking English, Social Science/history, Math, Science, and Foreign Language through junior year. You get a little bit more leeway senior year and can take only 4 or the 5, doubling up on one, but keep in mind the strongest applicants to top colleges will have all 5 all 4 years (+ generally one elective). Some colleges, such as in California, require one year of art (music, performance, graphic design, art history, photography, etc.).
At my school, a couple of high achieving students (like going to the ivies) go Bio → Chem → AP Physics 1 + AP Chem → AP Physics C + AP Bio. Most people, however, just do bio → chem → physics → repeat one of the three / APES. For example, I did bio → chem → AP Physics 1 → AP Physics C. Computer science is a math elective that you can take whenever. The sequence is generally comp sci → AP CSA → AP CSP. Another competitive route is AP CSP → java self-study over the summer → AP CSA.
