I want to do a more math-based economics major. One that deals more with stuff like game theory and systems. One typical of an economics major you'd see at a technical school like Carnegie mellon.

Unfortunately I don't have the money to goto a private school so what would be some alternative majors at a state school that would set me up well for a quantitative based approach to the social sciences in grad school? Computer science maybe? Is mathematics really the only way to go? Is engineering more based on decision making ?

Math + Econ is a good combo. If you’re set on graduate studies, the whole BS vs. BA ordeal doesn’t matter all too much. Just make sure to take econometrics, intermediate micro, macro, game theory, and some other theoretical courses.

Note: If your school offers a BS, go with that, but know that it’s not adequate at all in preparing you for grad school. A better idea might be to major in math, while taking the relevant econ courses.
