Thanks! Yeah, I know that there is no way our team will go to nationals, but I really desire to do well. It’s our seniors’ last year, and I just want to do well for their sake.
I’d make sure your team’s builds are done and ready to go—there’s nothing like a last-minute run to Home Depot at midnight to scare everyone, haha. Check that field guides and binders for study events are properly tabbed.
I don’t know how much cramming you can get done between today and tomorrow night, but try to get a good night’s sleep because you’ll have a long day ahead of you. And definitely have fun while you’re at it! My team always brought a volleyball and held impromptu pick-up games with other schools during downtime.
Best of luck! Hope your events go smoothly
Thank you for your advice and kindness. What other events did you compete in?
Yeah! Our team won State and I got 1st and 2nd in my build events (Air Trajectory and Scrambler). I didn’t place in Green Generation, however.
@apandia congratulations, and good luck at Nationals!
Well the new season is beginning. What events are you guys doing? I’m competing in Anatomy, Disease Detectives, and Protein Modeling.
Ugh, I love Scioly, but neither of my teams are at all organized. The high school team isn’t getting their teams in order until effing DECEMBER. (Invitationals in February!) AND they’re forcing everybody to do 2 engineering and 2 academic events. I’m doing Wind Power and It’s About Time for sure, because they have a testing portion, lol. My middle school team (that I coach) is where the middle school’s bored geniuses go to play. There are a ton of 6th graders this year, and they’re pretty much okay. There are a few new seventh and eighth graders as well. The seventh and eighth graders who were on the team last year are NOT fans of the new teacher coach. I didn’t like her at first, either, but then I sat down and talked to her and realized that she really appreciates it. Because Tennessee is stupid and doesn’t release schedules until 2 weeks in advance (if that), we have up to 6 kids signed up for each event. When we get the schedules, the teacher and I are going to assign kids to events so that nobody is in more than 4. (I may have done 6 in invitationals and 4 thereafter. I medaled 10 times total last year, though.) But this is the richest municipality in Tennessee, so all of the kids are stupid rich and act really entitled. I mentioned this to the teacher (who is new) and she was like “no, really? I couldn’t tell,” which made me laugh because sarcasm, that’s why. So all of the kids are like “I’m not the alternate, YOU’RE the alternate,” when in reality, we need all of these people working on the event as much as we can.
TL;DR: I compete in C and coach B. Officers of C need to maybe not assign events as late as December. This is why they didn’t make States last year! (Well, that and TSU messed up and Hume-Fogg will dominate forever.) B is great kids and I am so proud of them all the time, but they need to stop squabbling and work.
@awesomepolyglot I love scioly, it is my life. I’m sorry about the disorganization. Does your high school team have captains? Could you talk to someone in charge of the teams?
Is your high school Scioly separated into an A team and a B team? What other events are you considering to do?
Wow, that is so cool that you coach the middle school. My middle school just started a team last year, and the science chairperson is helping them. That sucks that some kids are arrogant. I think they’ll soon find that SciOly values hard work over their parents’ wealth. Yep, teamwork is important. Congrats on your 10 medals!
Oh my gosh though the kids need to calm down. But they’re great. And yeah, we have A and B. I would totally go talk to the captains but it’s a little late and I’m an awkward little freshman, so I’ll just become an officer next year, lol. And thanks about the medals, fam! It was really surprising for me, and in the end I just chalked it up to moving from VA to TN, where the competition (at least for B) is wayyyyy less intense.
The middle school team has 6 girls this year as opposed to 4. Me being the tremendous feminist (STEMinist, lol), I am so happy about it.
Both Sons going to state this year in March. They got 1st place in regionals for Disease Detectives and Green Generation.
