Are you familiar with the U of M Residential College? If so, I would greatly appreciate any details that might help me decide whether to enroll in it. I was accepted to the LSA a few months ago, but the RC seems to be a perfect match for me with its foreign language, writing, and theatrical opportunities.

Is it true that the RC is basically a commune of hippies? Are RC students sheltered from the rest of the university? Is East Quad a dump (or at least moreso than most dorms)?

The Rc is great! You do have to live in the dorm for 2 years and you do have the language requirement. It's is not a commune of hippies or weirdos.

My son was able to take a junior level creative writing class this past term and his class was one-on-one. He is a freshman. It is a tight-knit community and many of your classes are right in the dorm. I know for this term coming up that my son will have all his classes in the dorm. That's a big plus in the cold Michigan winters.

If you want to write and you want immersion languages then the RC is for you.

The RC is not a dump. I think it is one of the better dorms on campus. You will meet all kinds of interesting people there. The RC does have a smaller feel to it than the general population. You can get to know your professors on a first name basis. Class size is smaller as well.

If you want to make a big university smaller, the RC perfect.

RC is located in East Quad, which has an excellent location, close to Center Campus and the stores (including Village Corner) on South University St. It is an older dorm, but has been updated a number of times. In case you like college football, it is about 1.5 miles to Michigan Stadium.

I don't know much about the RC, but I do have a few friends in it. My one friend says the profs are hippyish, now I dunno what exactly that entails. I lived in east quad during orientation and I must say, it is a dump, even though must dorms are. I like the dorm that I live in now much better. THe bathrooms in east quad are THE WORST I've seen. The disadvantage w/ RC is that almost all of your classes are in East Quad. Even though its cold in michigan, i like the exposure i get from going to the different buildings, a walk thru the diag never hurt me. The friends that I have that are in the RC, I almost never see. But they are extremely thoughtful people and will say things that I would call "deep" in a way. They are also EXTREMELY interested in writing, reading lit etc. So, if you would like to live w/ people extremely passionate about the arts, reading writing, then the RC would be a good choice. I also know that east quad is one of the only dorms w/ a theater (auditorium like room setting), so I guess this is good for the theater people?
