I know UPenn does not participate in Score Choice. They want you to send your entire testing history to them. I took the ACT early Junior year as a “practice” run. I didn’t study and I got like 5 hours of sleep so I could see how I would do at the very worst. It sounds pretty stupid now but I didn’t think I would have to send this score. Now I’m thinking I DO have to send it to colleges. Is this true? Am I just screwed because I did this?
Send it but they look at highest scores (SAT/ACT) so you’re fine.
Yes you do have to send the score unfortunately. If they find out you deliberately chose not to send it, your application will be jeopardized by dishonesty. But you’re not screwed. Though it’s always good to try your best on each test, sometimes we humans screw up and decide to not take it seriously (like me for my June SAT) If your later scores show improvement you’re fine. They supposedly only consider the highest composite score, so I don’t see how one low ACT score would hurt you too much. Good luck:)
@girl1425 Thanks man (or woman :P) I wonder if there’s any way to indicate to them that I took it as a practice test? Probably not…
@SylvRsr Oh god, just the thought of doing something like that… Thanks for the input, I’m just sad because it’s so expensive for me to send so many tests to each school on top of application fees :((
@BagofBismuth Dunno if you took the SAT, but at least with them they’ll send all your scores for one fee - ACT… not so much… D:
@BagofBismuth Aww I’m sorry! I’m pretty sure colleges offer application fee waivers though. I didn’t pay for my Penn app at all. Maybe you should check that out and save those money for something fun. Apps can be expensive. $75*10=750 almost a thousand dollars…
Hahaha thinking back to my June SAT I wanna laugh. I studied for 3 hours total the night before.
Only took the ACT like a dummy @stellacastor
@sylvsRsr Yeah my family doesn’t qualify for waivers I’m 99% sure (upper-middle class). I’m applying to harder schools so there’s no guarantee I’ll get in and have to apply at quite a few. I have a twin sister as well so that doubles all the costs lol. Do you think I could contact Penn about waivers or anything? I know they have stuff on the Common App but I’ve never qualified for stuff like Reduced Lunch so I can’t use that… Gahhh I wish I had taken the SAT!!
@BagofBismuth Ohh I gotcha. Just out of curiosity, does your twin sister have similar stats as you? Like similar GPA test score interests? I only ask because I’ve always wondered how similar twins are.
I think you can actually. I have a friend who applied to all the ivies and schools like northwestern MIT Standford and whatnot and he’s upper-middle class. He emailed each school individually and explained his supposed “financial hardship to pay the fees” You definitely wouldn’t qualify for Common App fee waiver but if you contact the schools they’ll probably waive the fee.
@SylvRsr Hm, well I’m a guy (so we’re fraternal) and that changes things a bit just genetically speaking but I’m a slightly better student/tester than her. Her main issue with things is she just gets super anxious and then can’t really think straight… Not very fun going on road trips with her because she freaks out when she’s not sure what turn to take (lol). Oh and forgot about interests. We’re both pretty decent musicians (though I have a better practice/work ethic) but she’s great at art while I’m not. We’re both good at English and Science but I’m a bit better when it comes to Math (though it’s my weakest subject).
That’s interesting to note. I may contact admissions people for colleges to see about that. Sending test scores is expensive enough not even considering the additional cost of ~10+ college application fees. I think my parents would be happy if I managed to get some waivers, haha. Thanks for the help!
@BagofBismuth Oh haha I gotcha. I know two pair of fraternal twins and they have really different personalities and looks so I guess my question doesn’t really apply anymore.
You’re welcome! One tip I use to save score send fees: when you register for the SAT you get 4 free reports. You have to use it 9 days after the test. The downside is you never get you use score choice with those reports and you send your scores without knowing what the are. However, for schools like Penn, Cornell, Duke, Stanford(not sure bc I’m not applying to Stanford) and Rice that require your entire testing history, you can use your 4 free reports to save some money. You probably knew about it but just in case you didn’t
Wait you took the ACT just ignore what I said lol
No school will look at your lowest score. They might look at your best day, but if they look at your best combo, don’t worry about your worst combo or worst day.
Be honest, it won’t hurt you to be honest, and it might hurt you to lie.
@SylvRsr Haha yeah… I did know that actually. ACT does the same kind of thing. I did save on a couple schools that way but for some reason I sent one of them to Caltech even though I’d never get in…
@rhandco Oh gosh I wouldn’t ever lie about stuff like that. I just wanted to ask about it is all
@BagofBismuth Hey don’t say that! You never know! Schools like Caltech are reaches for everyone anyway
