PROMPT: Is using humor the best way to approach difficult situations?

Using humor is definitively the best way to approach difficult situations because it alleviates tense atmospheres. In science, laughter and having a good time is shown to have positive effects. Another example can be found in literature, where a few jokes here and there allows main characters to bond during a problem. As shown through literature and science, history, humor is the best method of facing hard times.

In the Grapes of Wrath, the Joads needs to travel to California to form a new, livable life. During the Great Depression, millions of Oklahoma families traveled to the west in hope for a better life. But that journey was not a walk in the park. Californians and mostly everyone in the West scorned at the Oakies appearance. They hated them due to their cheap labor cost, and thus in effect, taking away native state citizens’ jobs. Therefore, major protests and abuse were directed to the main family in this literary novel. However, during these hard times, funny moments help alleviate the hard times. For example, in one of government held dances, Tom joked with Ma. Rose of Sharon laughed with Casey. In fact, everyone just tried to forget about what they were doing and shared the one bond everyone loves: laughter. Thus, shown in John Steinbeck’s novel, The Grapes of Wrath, humor is extremely necessary, especially in problematic time periods, like the 1930s Great Depression Era.

As demonstrated by history, humor helps people perform better during difficult situations. For example in World War II, soldiers were sent off to an unknown place and told to fight for their country and their own life. In these tense times, everyone was completely scared and confused about what may happen to him, his family, or his friends. But between many battles, soldiers were known to joke around a moment or two. As shown in the realistic portrayal series, Band of Brothers, Major Richard Winters and Richard Nixon constantly uplift spirits by laughing and playfully teasing. In the beginning, many of the newbies didn’t know what to do, and by calming down and telling them it’s okay, they fought better and took orders with more acuteness. Hence, laughter can not only alleviate depressing depressions, but also helping people make better, quicker decisions.

Lastly, science has constantly emphasized the need of laughing. This summer I took a class in general neurological sciences and I learned how important humor is in human’s livelihood. Humor can help elderly become more cognizant, active, and social. Humor can even delay Alzheimer’s and heart diseases, all illnesses that seem to have no connection to humor. However, that was definitely not true. During the summer, I consistently visited an elderly old neighbor who was crippled and weak. At first she seemed to be apathetic. But after I told her some humorous events and funny jokes, she instantly lighted up. Apparently, told by the caretaker, she has not been this cognizant for a very long time. Thus proving that laughter can really do improve health.

Humor is very important to both the mind and the body. Humor helps so many people constantly in the world. Humor helped the Midwestern travelers on their path to a better life. It also allowed to soldiers that served in the deadliest war to perform better and more agile movements. And finally, jokes have allowed eldery to become a bit more healthy and more aware to the world. As demonstrated through science, literature, and history, humor is the best way to approach difficult situations.

Humor is very important to both the mind and the body.

Yes…I agree.

What you don’t tell me (at least not in much depth or with much originality) is whether humor is the the absolute BEST way to approach difficult situations. That is, after all, the assertion you’re being asked to evaluate.

If you really wish to argue that humor is the BEST of all possible approaches to problem solving, then you’ve got to be ready to tell me about different reasons why. Giving me a bunch of “reach” examples isn’t gonna get it done.

So deeper in context? Will do! Thanks :)

What grade would this essay roughly be?

Warrant your thesis and topic sentences. Your thesis should look like the following: (claim)+(because)+(reasoning behind claim)

Also, just add more analysis and less summary.

Overall, I would say 6-- 5 if you are a super harsh grader.

So deeper in context? Will do! Thanks

I didn’t say that, and I don’t know what you mean by the phrase “deeper in context.”

What I meant to say was to answer the question.

For example, you say that humor best enables people to “make better, quicker decisions,” but I don’t see the proof.

Let’s go a little farther here…

The assignment is to prove that humor is (or isn’t) the BEST way to approach difficult situations. Does anyone really think that humor was the BEST solution to the Okies’ plight? On the few occasions that humor does arise (and the book didn’t have one-one-hundredth the “humor” that your paper implies that it does), it’s used as a diversion from their misery—never as a solution of any kind.

As regards Alzheimer’s or any other medical condition, you’re gonna need to do a lot more to prove to me that humor is the BEST solution. Myself, I’d prefer science, research, medicine…humor would be pretty far down the list.
