Is style more important than substance?

The way a product is presented is just as important as its content. Although, it may seem superficial to judge a product by its looks/style, it is unavoidable. Time has proven that in literature the style that is most appealing will contribute to the popularity of the book or newspaper.

Love stories are numerous. Despite their number there is little deviation of the plot; the story of forbidden love is common. However, when one thinks of a forbidden love story Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet is the quickest to come to mind. The plays has been popular for several centuries now. The reason to its longevity is not only due to its plot, although, the death of two young lovers is very memorable. A key component to Romeo and Juliet is Shakespeare's use of the English language. Shakespeare's words are carefully chosen, they flow seamlessly when read. The reader feels the pain of the lovers, he hopes that their love is strong enough to overcome an old family rivalry. Shakespeare achieves this emotional roller coaster by the style of his language.

The New York Times is one of the most respected newspapers in the world. The quality of the journalism is outstanding. But it also has a great reputation. A business man often feels it is his duty to read the New York Times. A large number of people in suits could be found reading this specific paper on their way to work. It is not only a source of news, but it is also a symbol of intelligence and status. There are many publications that are full of interesting articles and unique views, however, few have the same circulation as the New York Times. The New York Times is currently in style.

The quality of the product is an important factor in its success, but it alone can not be the only one. Both Romeo and Juliet and The New York Times are of outstanding content, but they have that special quality that sets them apart. Romeo and Juliet's prose is enchanting and makes the reader feel engaged. Through out the years The New York Times successfully marketed itself into a symbol of sophistication. Substance is a necessity without which nothing great can be accomplished, but style is what makes a writing be remembered.
