Q: What motivates people to change?

Change occurs when people are faced with the opportunity to live in a safer, more advanced society. Several examples from history and current events clearly demonstrate that change comes from the aspiration of improving one's life. Whether the motive comes from fear, convenience or frustration, change always occurs when people feel the adjustment will better themselves and the society they are apart of.

As demonstrated by the USA PATRIOT Act, the chance to live in a safer nation will always bring about change. On September 11, 2001, terrorists attacked the World Trade Center in New York City, killing thousands of innocent civilians. Needless to say, the United States was in a pandemonium, with people terrified over future attacks and morose over lost loved ones. With the people in a frenzy, the government passed the PATRIOT Act in 2001 in an effort to arrest future attacks by catching possible terrorists before they strike. Although this act increased the ability of law enforcement agencies to search private records and was, therefore, criticized as an invasion of privacy, both Democrats and Republicans unanimously agreed that this measure was necessary. Therefore, when it comes to protecting their nation, people become motivated to change and are even willing to sacrifice a few civil liberties on behalf of their country.

Through the actions of refusing to give up her bus seat to make room for a white passenger, Rosa Parks galvanized the Montgomery Bus Boycott. Rosa worked full time as a seamstress in a department store, and just wanted a peaceful ride home after a long days work. After refusing to give up her seat, Rosa was arrested and found guilty of disorderly conduct. Her refusal to get up, though planned by the Civil Rights leaders, sparked the boycott and ultimately led to the law requiring segregation on buses to be lifted. Thus, Rosa's dream of equality for all and having been fed up with racism in society, led her to defy the state, which brought change and reform to the U.S.

As shown by the actions of Howard Schultz, change occurs when people face the possibility of improving lifestyles all around the world. In the mid 1980's, Schultz approached Starbucks management with an idea to create a chain of coffee shops. The management rejected his idea, causing Schultz to quit Starbucks and start his own coffee business, Il Giornale. Il Giornale became widely successful and in 1987, Schultz bought Starbucks for $3.8 million and created his own coffee shop chain. Although this idea was unprecedented in the U.S., Schultz decided to take the risk and reform the coffee industry because he saw the act as a way of advancing society and making it more convenient for customers.

After a careful analysis of the USA Patriot Act, Rosa Parks, and Howard Schultz, change is indeed motivated by the desire to protect and advance a nation. Without such strong views for a safer and more progressive society, change could neither occur nor adapt to everyday life. Changes are made each and every day all over the world, and are always motivated by a society or nation.

This was my first essay and the prompt came straight from the first test in BB. I tried following AcademicHacker's template. BTW, this was my first essay ever so I didn't stick to the 25 mins, it ended up being like 40.... And this essay is about a paragraph too long. the conclusion and the last sentence of the 4th paragraph didnt fit. but i just wanted to get a feel for the essay. so, any comments or advice would be greatly appreciated!

P.S. I don't think it was mentioned in the "how to write a 12 essay in 10 days" thread, but do i have to read or even use the quotes in the prompt? do u guys somehow incorporate the quote into your essay, or do you not even read it?

I think it would get a great score. However, the biggest challenge would be to write this in 25 minutes.

Thanks 4 asking, this Q has come to my mind today while I was trying to write an essay :</p>

am looking for an answer pls

^ yeah I looked at a few of the other writing threads and couldn’t find a conclusive answer :(

I would give it a 11 or 12 but unfortunately you did it in 40 minutes… (Pace yourself!!)
Anyway, if this essay was written in 25 minutes, you would definitely get a 10 or higher,
First reason: You fill the 2 pages (tip: let the intro and conclusion 2-3 sentences only)
2nd reason: A lot of details there as in stats and numbers
3rd reason: Coherent and interesting
