Scores too low?

My subject tests scores are low: 720 Math, and 640 Physics (and I'm applying as an engineering major....). Everything else in my app is fine, i.e. 2250+ SAT (with 780 on Math), 3.8 UW, A's math and science courses (including AP Physics). Would the subject tests rule me out? I'm retaking in January for other schools, but Rice doesn't accept Jan scores. Do you think they'd provide an exception/or will these scores not kill my app.

Thanks

your rank isnt too hot either

You won’t know til you apply. Which math did you take?

720 Math … I or II?

Your 640 Physics is going to make you a weak engineering applicant. Very weak. That’s the 43th percentile. Which means that a plurality of people who took the SAT II Physics exam scored better than you did.

Similarly, a 720 on the Math II exam puts you in the 72nd percentile.

Err … let’s stop with the hypotheticals. What did you actually get on the SAT?

Bottom line: if you want to get into Rice, please do not apply as an Engineering major.

While the scores are not outstanding, they are not app killers. I think you’ll be fine. Just do your best to put together the rest of your app to the best you can.

Good luck.
