I will be attending ut in the fall of 2012! i am an early graduate so ill be 17 when i go to college. I have already been looking into private dorms because I know they fill up quickly. SRD seems pretty promising, but i was wondering if anyone has any extra input that would be helpful! Any responses are appreciated!!:)

also, what is the laundry situation? do u have to pay to use the machines?

Hi…my daughter will be staying in SRD for Fall 11 and has stayed there for orientation and she really loves it. The laundry is pay per use, but they have a laundry card that you use that you can recharge with cash or credit card. They also offer dry cleaning pick up/drop off so it makes it really easy for dry cleaning items. There are different room types at SRD, so you can be in a suite with four girls sharing a private bath or in a regular double with a community bath. The community baths are stunning as they were just all redone and they are appointed like a luxury hotel bathroom.

The cost of the dorm ranges from a few hundred dollars more than UT’s Jester but never get higher than UT’s Durin. So it will depend on the room type to choose AND the room you ultimately get. If you think this is the dorm for you, get on the list now. That way you will get your contract in the first batch, then it is up to you to get in back ASAP (as in fill it out the day you get it and FEDEX to SRD…most girls do this, so if you put in “regular mail” you run the risk of being put on the wait list) They also offer single rooms if you are interested.

The food in my daughter’s opinion was excellent and they offer enough variety to keep it from getting boring. They do not offer a free pour soda machine (which my daughter felt was a good thing) but there are soda vending machienes. They do have tea, sweet tea, juice, milk and water at all times. So if you are a soda addict, it could be deal breaker for you.

The are completely redoing the pool right now, but it will be completed before the regular school year starts. The other amenities that drew her in was the housekeeping service once a week and the gym with trainers. There is a great study loft, and private study rooms that can be used as needed. Each hall has its own TV lounge and there is a really big screen TV down in what used to be the ballroom with video gaming systems. The laundry room also has great study tables and it is huge. I can’t imagine that every machine is ever full. But who knows. The whole dorm is also on private wi-fi and each room has basic Time Warner Cable. That’s all I know for now.

wow! that was extremely helpful, I really appreciate it! From the website it looks reallu nice and homey. Do you know if and when you can tour the place? because i am going down to UT in July for Longhorn Saturday and before I sent the application I wanted to see it in real life. I was looking into the Sunroom Single, super reasonably priced! Thanks again for your time and response!

I lived in SRD all four years when I was at UT. It was many years ago ('80-'84), but I loved it! The Sunroom Single is TINY, though - kind of like a big closet. I stayed in a Sunroom Double and thought it was great - roomy, sunny, and comfortable. It didn’t have a sink, but I really didn’t mind. The swimming pool was great - we spent a lot of time out there. I also spent a good bit of time in the study loft - very quiet and you can study intensely there.

I’m sure you could tour it any time you’re in town. I took my two sons there a few years ago, and they kindly gave all three of us a tour! There were some old photographs in the basement, and I’m 99% sure my mom is in one of them! :)

@MaineLonghorn I figured it would be really small, but in all honesty I really dont mind, I dont plan on spending too much time in there. But i do appreciate the input and the warning! Do they have any social activities to get to meet people? If so, can you give a few examples? I am about to mail off my application and just want to be 100% sure! Thanks for your reply!

Well, I remember doing stuff with the girls on my hall, but you’d probably do better to call and ask about special activities - I’m sure things have changed in 31 years, lol! When I started UT, I didn’t know a single person in SRD, even though I was from Austin. Two of my best friends at UT ended up being girls at SRD. My daughter just finished seventh grade, and I would love for her to live at SRD. She’s OOS, though, so she’ll have to get admitted to the school first!

i found a forum listing some activites such as pool parties, holiday gatherings and such. I think its a good fit for me, so im mailing my application tmro! :)

I’m also considering applying for SRD for fall 2012. It sounds really nice and I think that it would a good place for me, but are there any amenities that I would lose from living in an off-campus dorm? For example, would the Bevo bucks and meal plans still be available?

Your meals would be at SRD. When I lived there, they would provide sack lunches if you couldn’t make it back to the dorm - I wonder if they still do that! It’s right on the edge of campus, so it was never an issue making it back for meals.

@doodlebug546, as stated above all meals are included. It shouldnt be a problem getting back to the dorm because if you were planning to say at some of the on campus dorms such as kinsolving or duren it is literally a 1-2 minute extra walk for food rather than fattening cafeteria food.

*for good, healthy food

Doodlebug, while all of your meals are included at SRD (sans Friday and Saturday dinner), you can also purchase Bevo bucks and use them on campus for dining or at the restaurants/merchants listed on the website below:
[Division of Housing and Food Service - Bevo Bucks](<a href=“UHD Homepage | University Housing and Dining”>UHD Homepage | University Housing and Dining)

Many SRD residents have a few Bevo bucks handy just in case they want to eat with friends on campus occasionally or get a pizza delivered and don’t have the cash on hand. Keep in mind, too, that if you have a class that conflicts with lunch times at SRD, tell the kitchen staff and they will pack you a lunch. It’s a nice feature they offer.

They still do sack lunches and since meals are not offered Friday and Saturday evening…and evolution of supply and demand and most girls simply being “out” on those nights, you can always make a salad at lunch and put it in your frig. You can take a rubbermaid/tupperware container and even get what’s for lunch those days and do the same thing.

A note on the “single” sunroom. We were told those always go to returning upperclassmen. There are only 4 or 6 of them and because of the bargain price, it is easy to see why that is the case.

so is it even possible to get a sunroom single? or should i not get my hopes up.

Call Jessica at SRD. She will know. But if I remember correctly (it’s been a year) I believe she said they always go to returning girls (they get first choice).

alright thank you all so much!
