Hi,

I am deciding between the all girls dorm Kinsolving or the private dorm - Scottish Rite. Can anyone give the pro's and cons of each dorm or what they like about one or the other.

Thank you,

SRD is more expensive, but nicer, and has alot of sorority girls in it

The sweet girl giving our tour said there was a good number of students who do not participate in sororities...I am not interested in joining one at this time because of other activities I plan to be involved in.

I have some reservations about not being able to eat anywhere on campus with the meal plan from SRD and having to always go back to the dorm my freshman year. The price is not that much more than Kinsolving...

Thank you,

Go to the search function and type "Scottish Rite" and select "The University of Texas at Austin". There were 18 previous threads that included Scottish Rite in them.

Easily SRD if you have the money. You'll probably need to get the application and all that other stuff in real soon if not already.
It's nicer in quality than kinsolving. Food is, from what I have heard by people that have lived there, really good.
Only Hardin is better.

Do you guys think it would be too late to apply for housing at Scottish Rite? The website says that they are still accepting applications, but I am a bit apprehensive about this.

Call and ask. They fill up very early compared to the on-campus dorms. Lot of girls submit their application at the start of their senior year and priority goes to those that get their application and deposit in earliest. They are already mailing out contracts at this point; as is Hardin.

which one is better Scottish Rite or Hardin? and why?

Well if you would just be going to Kinsolving to eat anyway SRD is literally a 2 minute walk down the street.

If you plan on spending a lot of time in the Jester area, it may be a little different, but living at SRD isn't going to cause you tremendous problems with regards to eating if you are in the north area of campus.

Plus you can just use Bevo bucks to pay for meals at DHFS locations if you don't want to carry cash. Get a 10-meal plan or whatever at SRD and some Bevo Bucks and you should be good.

I actually live there (this is my second year) and I absolutely love it.

-There are a lot of girls there who are in sororities, but there are also a lot who arent. I didnt rush and neithhher did my roomate. They do a really good job of placing you with someone they think will be a good match for you.

-If money is a big issue you might not want to live there in order to cut costs where ever you can, but its not THAT much more, or at least not as much as most people think.

-The dining hall/food is AMAZING. Its not your average cafeteria food and a lot of people who dont live there and dont know anyone there go there just to eat. And if its between kinsolving and SRD, the distance is probably a minute or two more. And if you know that you arent goin to make it back for lunch, the kitchen will make you a sack lunch if you let them know ahead of time.

-It is definetly not too late to apple. I have a friend who applied in march of her senior year and still got in. If you think there is any change you will want to live there, go ahead and apply.

-The best thing about SRD is how home-y is feels. The staff is incredibly friendly and I always feel very safe there. I really trust everyone there.

How important are "connections" for SRD? It asked on the application form if I had any family that lived there, but I never did. Is that very important or no?

SRD is a classy place.

If you don't have any connections, don't worry. As far as I know, girls with connections are guaranteed a place but it isn't the entire dorm. You have to have Masonic sponsorship but if you don't know any Masons, they will find a Mason to list as your sponsor.

However, it's pretty late in the process to get in to SRD so you might want to apply soon to try to get a place next fall. There are girls who have been on the waiting list since birth!

haha thanks theloneranger! I sent in my application (and my picture..which i thought was a strange request for a dorm, but whatever!) this past week, so hopefully i'll get a place!

is it mostly for freshman girls?

it is my understanding that all dorms, private or otherwise, are mostly for freshman. Most sophomores that would be living in SRD are too busy living in the sorority houses, and many upperclassmen live off campus in apartments.

I had a question regarding scottish rite and financial aid. I was wondering if funds from my financial aid package can be used to pay for the fee at SRD? Also, how do I go about obtaining these funds? SRD has to be paid up front in July (if I'm not mistaken). Can I pay for it myself and then get reimbursed by the Office of Financial aid?
