Scranton Class of 2014

Update:

Preview Day sealed the deal! D is an official member of the Nursing Class of 2014. :D

After many other campus visits, this is where D seems to belong. Great nursing program, small classes, interested professors, friendly students, beautiful campus, lots to do in and around small (safe) city, lots to do on campus, good size (not too small or too big.)

It was a beautiful sunny day (that always helps). We all had a great time. We went to Riverdance at the Cultural Center on Saturday night, ate dinner at Farley's, and had a wonderful stay at the Radisson, which happens to have an amazing Sunday brunch too! We visited the park adjacent to campus, checked out the shops & ski area three miles away, and found a great ice cream spot at a real dairy (Mannings) down the road. :D

D met some amazing kids involved in band, co-ed intramural dodgeball, and soccer. We also visited the indoor soccer facility next to campus. She is ready to play indoor co-ed soccer too. All the students were happy to be at Scranton, and very proud to be there.
They all seemed welcoming, bright and enthusiastic.

D is very excited, and so are we! It is great to find a college where you know your kid will thrive.

I am so glad to hear such positive things about Scranton. I am a Fordham alum and LOVE the Jesuits. My son is only a freshman, but we have already started thinking about colleges and Scranton seems like a really nice place. We are from Long Island so it is not too far from us. I think we will take a trip to Scranton soon, to see it for ourselves. Best of luck to your daughter and may she have a wonderful time at Scranton!

1sokkermom - Thanks for the info. We missed acceptantce students day - we plan to visist next weekend. Is your D definitely going? My S is still deciding.

Hi MaryAnn,

Yes, we sent the deposit. She wore the University of Scranton shirt today!

We are not real close (over 5 hour drive), but she really connected when we visited. She had gone in February with H, and we all went to Preview Day. The kids were happy, enthusiastic, and welcoming. The professors seem amazing, small classes, and nice size.

We really like what the City has to offer. It is going through a revitalization and provides lots of things to do. It was a very pleasant surprise. It seems safe, and (for nursing) we loved the fact that there are three hospitals within walking distance of campus.

We did note that a lot of the kids are from PA, NY, NJ & CT. D doesn’t seem to mind that at all.

Good Luck.

We are going next Sunday. Scranton is one of his top choices.

We also visited on accepted students day and the school impressed me very much. Being my son has narrowed his choices down to Hamilton or Washington and Lee I would recommend Scranton very highly.

The small class sizes are wonderful!

Well I was going to Pitt (had little financial aid from them) but Scranton came up with a great package and after some rethinking and another to visit to Scranton, I am officially going to the University of Scranton! Class of 2014! I got a nice scholarship and I am part of the SJLA!

Congratulations! And SJLA is awesome!

Would you say I should do SJLA? The theology and philosophy courses look awesome but the course load looks kind of heavy. I am just worried this might get in the way when med school application season approaches and I want to take a MCAT kaplan class or etc. Though I am very tempted.

My D did it and loved it, although she was not pre-med. However, she said over 1/4 of those in SJLA with her were pre-med. It gives you great critical thinking skills. You can certainly start in it and if it becomes too much you can drop it. SJLA also helps you meet some of the core requirements. And you will have a terrific prof. for your intro. to phil. class in the fall. My kids both loved him. Scranton also runs an MCAT prep course and has excellent advising for pre-med students.

Sounds great. I am commuting which makes things a lot easier for me (studying at home, job, etc.) though commuting will probably take 30-45 so I will probably want to avoid 8 o’clock classes (you think that will be possible?).

It might be possible to avoid them. D said she never had any. I know S has had a couple, but didn’t have much choice in the matter.

Where do I write the check for my admissions deposit to? Just simply to university of scranton?

I am a physician. I decided not to do SJLA, in retrospect I would have enjoyed it. While Catholic, I came from a public school and prior to entering Scranton, was a bot worried about the extra Religion and Theology courses. In the end, I took extra anyway, was involved in campus ministry and retreats. There were at least a half dozen SJLA students that I recall who did go to med school.

I was accepted in the University Honors program. It was a lot of work, but one of my best experiences. My senior project was very time intensive and I elected not to play varsity sport my senior year.
