pretty much my school system is ********tt and they make me take algebra 1 9th grade. i wanted to take pre cal next year.but i apprantly can't b/c u need to know algebra 2 and geometry to do it. and i can only take algebra 2 or geometry next year. so what do u guys suggest i do? i'm very desperate

are you in 9th grade now?
try to find a way to enrolly in alg2 and geometry concurrently, or better yet take geometry this summer.

Take courses in the summer through EPGY, or test out. Make friends with the upper-level math teachers at your school...just go in after class one day and ask the department head about self-studying or something, which will show your motivation etc. Seriously, though, don't let your school system keep down your academic level...it's happened to me so often and I never knew what to do at the time.

take alg. 1 freshman yr, geometry over summer, alg. 2 sophomore yr, pre-cal over summer, and calculus AB or BC as a junior. I say that's a pretty big accomplishment and heck, lots of people here on CC won't even take Calc. until they're seniors, so I say don't let the school disappointment you. find loopholes/tricks/anything and use it.

try to take geometry and alg 2 concurrently or take geometry or alg 1 at a community college

anyways, you wouldn't be screwed from yale, since it's ur school's fault not yours....unless there is some way around it.

Yeah you could probably take geometry or algebra 2 this summer with Apex, a virtual high school, or epgy.

I'm sorry, it's nobody's fault. Look, I took Pre-Cal Junior year, it's not tha big of a deal. Do the best you can with the opportunities presented to you, seek out more opportunities and you'll be fine.

You are a tad too young to be worried about whether Yale will be upset that you took Algebra I your freshmen year (trust me, they won't be)

At the high school in my district, a lot of freshman take PRE ALGEBRA in 9th grade.

I once heard of a girl who went to MIT, but didn't take Calculus yet.

I'm going to have to take Precalculus senior year :(. Unfortunately, our school doesn't accept credits from community colleges, etc. So if I decide to skip, I can take AP Calc, but I'll still have to take Precalculus too, wasting a whole class period of the day.

I dont know if they would take EPGY as an exception... dunno.

At my school, most students take Algebra 1 Honors during 8th grade and even some take it during 7th grade.

You can also take Geometry and Algebra 2 in the same year. That's what I did.

Your school system offered ALGEBRA 1 8th grade, you weren't at the level, which is why you're doing it in high school. Did you really think you could go in Precalculus with only Algebra 1? Plus take a course over the summer.

Like what everyone else said, just take it during the summer or at night at your CC. A few of my friends only took algebra 1 in 8th (I took it in 7th) and they wanted to take the classes I was taking so they caught up by enrolling at a private high school during the summer.

There are a couple of states that have online schools, but I couldn't find a Massachusetts Virtual School. I live in Florida, so Florida Virtual School ( www.flvs.net ) has always been an option for me. However it isn't free to anyone out-of-state, so it'd be expensive unless you are filthy rich haha.

I would be happy that you can't take Pre-Cal without Alg 2 and Geometry. You'll be wishin you had that knowledge. I azxd's advice best.

It is absolutely fine to take the Algebra I class in 9th grade, and it is fine to take Pre-Calculus senior year; Calculus is supposed to be a college class, and just because many schools offer it as an AP doesn't make it a necessity as a HS curriculum. Yale will understand if you take that class because that's how your school works in turns of its curriculum. You will still be taking the best classes, I hope, and it won't be that much of an impact. The only exception I might make to the rule is if you plan on majoring in mathematics, then Calculus might help, but otherwise, you can wait til College.

All the OP has to do is:

Freshman year: Algebra 1
Sophomore year: Geometry and Algebra 2 (tell your guidance couselor you want to do this)
Summer: Precalculus at a Community College
Junior year: AP Calculus AB
Senior year: AP Calculus BC or AP Statistics

yeah jman, i like your idea. i think i might do that. but i hope my school lets pre cal count as a class

Yeah, I'm not totally sure about the Community College Precalc part....how it's put on your transcipt, how many high school credits it would be equivalent to, etc.

So, without the CC class, it would look like this:

Freshman year: Algebra 1
Sophomore year: Geometry and Algebra 2 (tell your guidance couselor you want to do this)
Junior year: Precalculus
Senior year: AP Calculus AB and/or AP Statistics

Either way, you could still take AP Calculus

i know, but i'm just worried yale will look down on the fact i didnt take AP CAL or w.e jr year
