Screwed if undecided?

So I keep hearing how Harvard is a sink-or-swim kind of place where you have to have a lot of initiative and be really independent. (I anticipate this will not be a huge problem - I've never been a fan of hand holding.) What scares me more, however, are the many claims that students should have a pretty clear idea of what they want to do at soon as they get there.

While I know many people still change majors in sophomore year and such, I have heard multiple times that people there tend to be very driven and goal-focused. Sure, I'm driven, but not in a specific academic direction as of this writing.

Can current/past Harvard students comment on the importance of Knowing What You Want to Do as soon as you set foot on campus? Or will being undecided lead to floundering about like a giant, flopping, Crimson failure? :)

Hey lingbo - you should ask this in the Harvard 2011 Yahoo! group. In terms of my experience, no one really knows what to do here. Don't worry about it!

lingbo,

you are in no way screwed if undecided. i think only one of my roommates knows for sure what she is concentrating in. the rest of us jump from concentration to concentration just like days of the week. so, you'll fit right in!!
