Hello! I have a question about the application process.
In the Common App, it says that you can “submit a portfolio so that your special talent in one or more of the arts will be considered as part of the admission process to Scripps College” I am planning on majoring in Psychology with a minor in Fine Arts. However, to my knowledge, I can only decide on my minor once I am accepted.
Thus, would submitting a portfolio give me a favorable impression even though I’m not applying to major in the Fine Arts?
Additionally, while I have a strong passion for art, I am not getting great grades (currently a 5+ in the IB system), so would a “mediocre” portfolio (in the eyes of my teacher) have a negative effect on my application?
Thank you very much!
(P.S. I have uploaded this question on the “Ask A Scripps Student” as well, but because I think that thread is not very active these days, I am also asking this question on a new thread. Please forgive me.)
Since a portfolio is optional you should think hard about sending one in. I would advise only sending in very good to great material. Sending in average material may end up being a negative if the reviewer feels like you have wasted his/her time. Your time would be better spent writing about your passion for the Fine Arts in one of your essays or during your interview.
@Ladyengineer2012 Thank you very much for this advice! I hadn’t thought about it from the reviewer’s perspective and I think you’re very right. I did write about my passion for the Fine Arts and how it has helped shaped by character for the Common App essay, so I think that will suffice.
My only concern is that if they read about my passion for the arts in my essay and then see my grade, wouldn’t it perhaps be strange to see such a large gap? I’m worried that they’ll look at my grade and wonder if I’m being honest about my love of the arts.
My D2 has a strong interest in arts and was considering a minor in visual arts when applying to schools. She decided NOT to send in a supplement – just not knock your socks off work, and she had a strong application otherwise. She got in everyplace she applied, including schools similar to and higher ranked than Scripps. Don’t feel obligated.
@intparent Thank you so much for this personal advice. It’s extremely reassuring to hear that she was accepted to all her colleges (congratulations, by the way! ) without having to submit a supplement. Thanks so much.
I don’t think I will submit a portfolio based on your advice. As you have said, I think I’m too busy to consider doing it right now. Thanks again
