my daughter and I visited CMC with the NHS group at school last year and she really liked the consortium. She really thought Scripps would be a great fit. She recently went to a presentation in No. california about the 5C’s. She came back really disappointed in Scripps. She said it was presented as very liberal/feminist school and the “CORE” classes sounded like something she has no interest in. I would like to take her for an overnight but would love to know what other Scripps students think of this impression. My daughter is very science minded and is open minded but I would say our family leans towards a libertarian political school of thought.
I am not a Scripps student, but I visited Scripps and some of the other Claremonts a few months ago. I got the impression that it is a very liberal school, and that being a women’s college, feminism is very much apart of the school environment. If your daughter is not comfortable with that, Scripps might not be for her.
Scrips does have a pretty strong feminist vibe. My D is a Mudder, and she loves hanging out at Scripps because of this. Sounds like your D might fit in better at CMC.
Thanks for the information. She has decided to cross Scripps off her list for now. She has decided to apply EA to Pomona. It’s a big academic reach for her but she’s being true to herself and I think that is important
I don’t think Pomona is particularly conservative, and it is very difficult to get into. Is there some reason she isn’t focused on CMC, which is clearly the most conservative of the 5Cs?
Well – if she is libertarian, her social stances could be described as liberal, which would fit in well at Pomona; economically, libertarianism is classically liberal, though today in the USA that is known as “conservative” – in that sense, CMC would be better.
intparent, We visited CMC which is an amazing college. She has an interview at Pomona in October and she may go take a look at CMC again. For whatever reason, when she went to a panel discussion on the 5C’s she felt Pomona was the only one that really felt right for her. She wants to do pre-med and it seemed to be the best match. Right now she’s just thinking about early decision. Perhaps she will apply to CMC for RD. Prezbucky, you are correct, she is more libertarian and it is classically liberal. I think she’ll do fine at any college…she was just turned off by what appeared to be an angry feminist feeling she got from Scripps.
