Anyone know about the differences between these women’s colleges?
School atmosphere, research and internship opportunities, relationship with teachers, dorms, food, clubs…? I won’t visit all of them so I’d like some advice (financial aid not considered). I’ve looked at other sites online for pure data, so I’m looking for opinions of people that go there or have visited.
Look about 10 threads down, I gave my take on BMC vs. Scripps in a similar thread.
okay thanks, would you happen to know anything about Mount Holyoke as well?
Also, most of these threads are about getting into one of the following schools. I will be part of the Class of 2022, so I’m looking whether to attend or not.
Congratulations on some great choices! These are all excellent schools and there are no bad options here.
To address your question, here’s a few differences that stood out:
[ul][li]Interaction with Men: Scripps is part of the Claremont Colleges, five liberal arts colleges that are co-located (e.g. adjacent with each other). Cross-college enrollment and shared facilities are expected. Bryn Mawr has a close relationship with Haverford, which is just down the street. So, the question is how closely do you want to interact with men in your classes and activities? Scripps will have the most interaction, Bryn Mawr is in the middle, and Mt Holyoke will have the least.[/li][li]Access to a Large City: It’s easy for Bryn Mawr students to go into Philadelphia (and even NYC). Mt Holyoke is a long drive to Boston. Scripps is near Los Angeles, but traffic makes it seem further away than you might expect by looking at a map.[/li][li]Size: While they are all small LACs, their size does vary quite a bit:[/li]Scripps: 1000 (but feels larger due to the other Claremont Colleges)
Bryn Mawr: 1400 (but feels larger due to nearby Haverford)
Mt Holyoke: 2200
[li]Weather: This one is obvious, but Scripps won’t ever have cold winters or snow. And they have a beautiful outdoor pool. If you like winter, go to the Northeast. [/li][/ul]
Good luck!
@magtf1. Mt. Holyoke is part of the Five Colleges Consortium, with Smith, Hampshire, Amherst, and UMass. There is lots of cross-registration. D had males in many of her classes at Mt. Holyoke as a result.
I’m a MHC student, do you have any particular questions?
