According to apartments.com, the average rent in Santa Clara is about $3,000/mo per apartments.com. So, maybe you split that 1 or 2 bedroom in half or thirds and then you add food and incidentals.
I don’t know if my analysis is correct, but I still think if you live off-campus in Santa Clara, the numbers would say on-campus living with a meal plan is much cheaper than off-campus living.
R&B is more than 11,000/year. This year is atypical because the dorms weren’t open for Fall quarter so the remainder of the year (winter and spring quarters) are prorated. In a typical year, the cost is $15K-$17K depending on the meal plan (and that was for 2019-2020). https://www.scu.edu/living/residential-living-options/2019-2020-room–board-rates/
As for off-campus housing, it obviously varies depending on size and location, but with a roommate or two, you can find something somewhat affordable.
I live here and I can tell you it’s more expensive to live here. So, if it were me, plan for a higher cost than most college locations in the US, especially, if you’re shopping at Santana Row.
As for sharing a house with 7 other girls, I’d ask how many bathrooms in this house?
My D18 in Ann Arbor rents a nearly brand new apartment with 3 other roommates, 5-min walk to campus,. Each roommate has their own bedroom and bathroom for a bit less than $1,000/mo. including utilities. And there’s security, fitness room, media and meeting rooms, free coffee, Amazon Hub, etc.
And the leasing office bought them lunch for some reason the other day from Chipotle.
@sushiritto congrats to your D. I’ll ask my friend the next time I talk to her about the house and any more housing info. I think it was just outside of campus so worth sharing. I would expect to pay more for outside food, etc. We are overpriced down here too.
@NateandAllisMom The reason I ask, and it’s really just a rhetorical question, is that my D18 had an opportunity to rent a 5-bed/1 bath house, all-in for $500/mo in Ann Arbor. But the place didn’t look that great to me via internet pics and 5 people sharing one bathroom is/was not an optimal arrangement.
@sushiritto so my friend’s daughter had two rentals the last two years of school at SCU. She said one was $1000 for a large, shared bedroom with a walk-in closet 25 minutes to school $1200 5/5 and 10 girls. The other was across the street, much smaller bedroom shared for 7 bed / 3 baths and nine girls total. She said there is a specialty rental company up there that they used.
@NateandAllisMom So, what that says to me is that my D21 would not likely participate in a rental with a large number of people and would prefer a smaller rental with a better bath to bed ratio. And that means more money. But that’s just us. Everyone is different.
And of course, I’m getting ahead of myself, since D21 hasn’t been accepted to SCU yet and may not be accepted. Period. Again, while not D21’s top choice, SCU is a great choice nonetheless.
In normal times I think they would get sophomore year in the dorms, so that’s pretty good compared to some colleges. My S won’t be excited probably about sharing a room all 4 years but also could be fun to share a house with the right people.
As for Baylor vs SCU for pre-med, I would look at med school acceptance rates. However, Baylor is going to be more cost-effective as they are more generous with scholarships. My D18 daughter was accepted EA into SCU and to Baylor. She received no merit $ from SCU, but $16k a year with opportunity for more at Baylor.
Strongly suggest second thought about sending your kid here. Our DD graduated last year. We loved the school on tour. Jesuit education, private, etc. School has a very hard left activist culture. If your kid comes from traditional family and has reasonably moderate values, may be harassed. Tolerance of different lifestyles is not enough. Must go all in to the alternative culture or be made to feel outcast. Not at all what we expected.
If it wasn’t a good match, why didn’t she transfer? I, for one, am glad that that SCU is not all kids from “traditional families”. Maybe you mistook a Jesuit school for a Christian one?
