Hi guys! I need some advice regarding college decisions, as this is so much harder than I expected. I’ve managed to narrow it down to Santa Clara Universty and UCLA, since USC’s financial aid package was pretty sad.
Alright so the costs at both schools: SCU will cost me a little more than a UC (About 37k per year), because of the scholarships they’re giving me.
If I go to UCLA, I will be required to pay the OOS cost of 58k for the first year, but I will be able to establish residency by the second. (Because my entire family is moving to California this summer) So for the next three years I’d be able to pay 34k per year.
Both are affordable for my family, but we might have to take out a little bit in loans for the first year if I go to UCLA.
Here are the pros and cons of both schools from my point of view:
UCLA:
Pros:
-The brand name, so it will surely help in obtaining a good job
-Large research uni- so more opportunities
-Wider range of classes to choose from
-Better social life (compared to SCU imo)
-Amazing location&Beautiful campus
-Competitive environment (It makes me work harder in school.)
Cons:
-Large Classes
-Difficulty getting classes
-Is it true that they cram 3 people into dorms meant for 2? Please tell me that’s a rumor.
-Far from home (The Bay Area)
-No business school for undergrad. Does this affect career prospects?
-Difficulty getting into the business econ major?
SCU:
Pros:
-Smaller school, so smaller classes and more individual attention
-Amazing location with regards to career prospects- Silicon Valley!!
-Beautiful campus
-Their business school is pretty highly ranked (43rd by Bloomberg)
-Close to home
-Wide variety of majors to choose from in the business school (Finance, econ, accounting, etc.)
-19k scholarship per year!
Cons:
-Not very well known outside the Bay Area?
-Not considered very prestigious, like UCLA is
-Not as many opportunities as compared to UCLA (with regards to class variety, minors, etc.)
-The social life doesn’t seem that great.
-Lots of bad reviews on StudentsReview
So yeah this is what I’ve gotten so far with my research. If anyone could provide any more insights or help me out in any way that would be great!
Wow I’m sorry for the really long post
